Rhino Rack on TRD

So I wasn't sure I wanted the gobi or baja for a number of reasons.

1st off, everyone and there mother has them.

2nd, both are HEAVY and since I use mine as a daily driver, why not find something lighter?

Nothing wrong with what you got, but some of the statements here seem a tad misleading.

Std Baja rack weighs 65lbs. This is stated as being 50lbs, add the the factory rails + connectors and it is probably more. Also no wind deflector..., so not such an MPG win if you ask me.

Their website shows a max load of 175lbs. Baja and others are up to what the roof can support ~300lbs.

I've also seen the fortrunner rack, which is extremely well made. It is 71lbs installed.

The factory roof rails don't weigh much but they do flex! This is why almost all roof racks replace the factory rails.

Well, just did the flex test... Im 245lbs and just hung on one side and then sat up top on middle of rails on passenger side... zero flex.
Maybe the factory crossbars flex, but not the rails...at least not with 245 attached to them.

I think they replace the factory rails not because they flex, but because it's easier for them to build a rack without having to figure out a way to attach to a railing system already in place. It also allows them to make them longer than just staying within the factory railing system.

This is not a baja rack, its a rhino rack. Rhino rack is 43lbs. The max load installing on CROSSBARS is 175. The crossbars are not used on this. The rails are rated at 300 dynamic and 600 static if I recall correctly.
You can buy a wind deflector in the accessories... Just not sure I like the idea of a wind deflector so far away from the top of the windshield like on a full rack.

Every real rack I have seen has the rack mounted on top of the roof rails where they bolt to the roof not in between.

I know it is not a Baja rack. You stated you wanted something that was not so heavy (like the others). The other racks (Baja, Fortrunner...) are not heavy. The final installed weights are very similar. And they are much stronger IMHO.

I'm glad you like what you got, though. Hope the factory rails hold up for you.

Yuppers! The Rhino puts its weight more towards the center of the span which is the least supported part of the rack from the roof rails so it's obviously weaker...

Come on now. I would bet a brand new TRD PRO that would never happen. Besides, I think most people who buy racks don't put anything else heavier. Yes, there are those that need the extra support a gobi rack can give you, but I will never need it.

Could you show me a close up of how it is mounted? I thought they needed to be mounted to their crossbars. You are saying it mounts up to just the "legs"?

Too dark right now to take the photos, but no, they do not attach to the crossbars. I do have crossbars which I did not remove (just moved them out of the way). These attach only to the sidebars, they come with a set of their own crossbars which fit nicely unseen under the rack.

Not at all. I love the look of the gobi. But I know you can't lift it with one hand. I had a baja rack on my 3rd gen....loved it, but I couldn't lift it up there without a helping hand.

This rhino rack I think works for what it's made for. If I want to remove it, in minutes I can have it off with no help and it will look like there was never a rack up there to begin with....another great selling point.

Don't get me wrong the rack is bad ass! The center span mounting not so much! If they offered what K9 does I would have one on my rig as we speak!

Just messing with you... I did put thought into the rails. But after doing the research and checking the weight limits on them, 300lbs static is more than enough for most. It'll probably never see anymore than 100 lbs to be honest with you...

No, it's got the 2" lift for toytec.

Yeah it is probably the best strap on rack I have seen. Especially since it doesn't use the cross members. It should be though. It isn't cheap in comparison to other strap on racks.

One thing I like about this and my front runner is we can buy different mounts to fit another vehicle down the road if we need to.

I have the Gobi Stealth and ladder on my Inferno and probably would not trade it for the Rhino. But I do like how minimal that thing looks on your truck. I don't feel the weight of the Gobi as much as I do feel the drag it creates and the minor hit my gas mileage takes for it. I wonder if this will create as much drag as a full rack unloaded?

It's a shame that wouldn't fit on my Trail. Guess I'll just have to make do with my "heavy" old dime a dozen Baja Rack..... out:
