RiFF RaFF's 1993 4Runner SR5 (Honey Badger) Build

The 80 wheels are 4.5" b.s. Congrats on the new project. Two of my friends recently got 80's, one with a 6.2 Detroit diesel swap. They are sweet.

I can't wait to put her through Sea Trials. Head Gasket - Installed. Replacing dry and brittle seals now. Packing wheel bearings. Draining and refilling diffs.
The seal on the oil pump was like dry spaghetti - basically just crumbled.
Lots of little things - hoses, fluids, radiator flush/fill (PO ran 'Stop Leak' and gummed things up - probably to try and seal the head gastket leak on cylinder 3).

Mechanicals look really good! Exhaust - wasted. YEAH Rock Auto! They have the whole exhaust systems for a decent price. WOOHOO!!

Now on to The Honey Badger.

Tomorrow - taking her to The Cove for some range time, and light wheeling. Hoping to hit the trails again there this weekend with my club. Can't wait to try out the ARB selectable locker in the front.

:peep:

Awwww yesss! Another awesome 4runner/ 80 series combo! I added a '96 LX450
back in December, my '89 4runner instantly got jealous and set the alternator on fire. So i have that to deal with when I get back from this deployment.

I thought it was just my 93 that acted up. LOL!!
Not only is it the "I'll just turn off when I want" crap, but I had the driver's side brake caliper seize up, and the passenger side upper ball joint go south. I swear the Honey Badger is PMS'n all over the place. Time to drop a couple of Midol in her gas tank.
:biggrin2:

Well today was replace the distributor day. Here's a great write up that I followed. It helped, and was spot on.

I won't have to re-write, but here's some pictures along with some short words.

1. Cleaned up all around the old distributor to ensure a clean start. Used BRAKE CLEANER as the build-up wasn't too bad.

Nice and clean now. Ready for the operation.

Used a Sharpie to make alignment marks on the old distributor. Lined up the rotor, and a straight line across the hold down screws. Also marked the location of the distributor hold down bolt.

Out with the old. There is only the one bolt that holds the distributor in, and it's a 12mm. Same bolt that's loosened when adjusting the timing.

New distributor (left) and old one (right).

Here's the culprit that caused all the problems. This pickup in the distributor looks bad as compared to the new one.

Here's the old one.

And the new one.

All buttoned up, and fired on the first turn of the key. (sigh of relief) To be absolutely sure I'm going to beg, borrow, or steal (buy) a timing light to get the time up to specs.

I hope the distributor fixes it. I was going to suggest a bad ground, especially with the intermittent nature of the problem.

Thanks Bob. So far - so good. I picked up a cheapy HB timing light yesterday, and now it's time to see how close it is.

The shortened procedure is to:

Using a service wire, connect terminals TE1 (or T) and E1 of the data link connector.

Check idle speed.
Idle Speed:800 ( ±50 ) rpm.

Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley.

Ignition Timing:10°BTDC at idle.

If not as specified, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and rotate distributor housing until marks align.

Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.

Remove service wire from data link connector.

Check idle advance timing with service wire removed.
Ignition Timing:8°BTDC at idle.

Check idle speed and adjust if necessary.

Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.

EDIT - Timing all adjusted. I was very close to what it's supposed to be. Only 2 degrees off. Now it's back to specks, and running just fine. Next - see how the gas mileage does.

:bravo:

Finally - all the kinks are worked out. Last one being a bad distributor.
Here's a couple from a club run (Off Camber Crawlers) at The Cove Campground at Gore Virginia.

VERY Off Camber - My Driver's front tire was 4+ feet in the air before righting itself. Pucker factor a 6 out of 10.

This is a time lapse

And a couple of pictures - The Honey Badger performed flawlessly! Only problem - a 30 amp fuse blew to the Viair compressor. LOL

What a great day to be out on a crisp fall day.

Another video:

My 1993 4Runner (TEAM HONEY BADGER) making a run at Long Bridge Pit. The Cove Campground - Gore Virginia.
Thanks Ryan for the video.

The Honey Badger is running great. She got me in and out of our hunting area. Opening day of Rifle Season I bagged these two BIG White Tail does. Harvested both of them using my Remington 700 .300 Win Mag at 238+ yards - within 5 minutes.
The deep freezer is almost filled with venison now. Still have a buck and a doe tag left. Going out again this coming Monday.

The two does (closest) are mine. The two bucks are another friend's we were hunting with.

These videos are awesome. Love seeing a 2nd gen get used.

You where at Fairfax Hospital after the Motor cycle accident in the TICU?

One week in INOVA Shock Trauma. Then ICU, and slowly healed up enough to be transferred to Acute Rehab at Winchester.
That was 2008 July through move of October.

Still hurts like hell. :violin:

I remember you and I took care of you for couple days if I remember correctly nice to see you doing so well. I worked in the TICU from 2001 to 2013.

Thank you. The care there is beyond compare, and my simple thanks can't do what you all did for me justice. Not only saved my leg, but my life. Merry Christmas from my family to you, yours, and all that care for others. God bless. :o)
sduck27 - correction. My wife said I was in TICU for over three weeks. Since I spent most of that time in a drug induced coma I can't remember much as you can imagine. A ruptured diaphragm is definitely no fun. :o(
