Cargo Box Build Project

Cargo Box Build

With Moab coming up, I have been wanting a better storage solution, I can't just throw all the stuff I need in the back and expect to keep it organized. With inspiration from BigFishAllDay and BigRogers' Cargo boxes, I decided to set out making my own.

There were a few things that I wanted to change from those two though..
1) I didn't want any DEEP compartments. As most of the time I will be reaching in while standing outside and behind the vehicle, a deep compartment would be difficult to get stuff out of.
2) I didn't want the top doors to be so tall swing on an axis along the width of the vehicle, I wanted short doors that would swing sideways on an axis along the length of the vehicle.
3) I wanted one of the compartments to be able to fit a CV axle without being in an awkward position.
4) I didn't intend to screw directly into the side of the plywood. I was always taught that was not very strong, even if you drill pilot holes. So I wanted to use some support pieces for all the screws instead of going directly into the plywood.
5) Don't leave bare wood. Paint it.

Which Side?

When picking which side to build the box on, these are lots of things to consider. All of these reasons are why I decided the passenger side was better for my uses.
1) There is already too much weight on the driver's side. Such as battery, fuel tank, driver.. I wanted to try to balance it out at least a little bit.
2) The filler neck hump on the drivers side wheel well presented a huge obstacle for me. I didn't see any way to get around or over it without losing a ton of storage room.
3) If I could somehow incorporate the existing passenger side cargo compartment into a cargo box build, that would be even more clean.
4) As I occasionally sleep in my truck on camping and lake trips, I wanted the box to be like a night shelf. And therefore I wanted the power outlet to be near the box.

Started with this:

back piece cut:

Fitting Floorboard

Structure is about halfway done here

Time for the Front piece.

Had to contour the top door so it could open without hitting the side of the truck and the window supports:

Paint it white:

Fitting the drawer slides:

Rug layed out:

Carpeted.. I used probably 100+ HD staples.

Test Fit!
119_1173.jpg~original

Had to flip the factory mounting points to be able to use them on the cargo box system.

119_1175.jpg~original

Used turnbuckles. You can see why those open-ended S-hooks are needed.. Too many closed ends.

119_1178.jpg~original

Using the stock cargo cover mounting points- Big credits to BigFish on that one..
119_1203.jpg~original

Swapped the regular bulb in the 3-D maglite for an LED bulb.. its awesome!

... Due to pictures-per-post limit, continued on next post.

Wheel well fitment:

12V VIAIR portable Air Compressor fits perfectly in the drawer with the extra supercharger belt.
119_1198.jpg~original

Spare CV axle (Thanks BFAD!) and Jumper cables.. I have a lot more to fit in there too.
119_1200.jpg~original

As I mentioned before, I wanted the box on the same side as the power outlet for car camping.. this is why!

EDIT: 9/19/2012

Added a Coke Classic Bottle opener!

Cargo Box build- Photobucket Album

This is the first time I have really worked with wood in my life, I think I did pretty well!
The box turned out to be just about EXACTLY what I had in my head to begin with..

I hope you like it!

Looks awesome! For never really working with wood before, you did a great job. Most important thing is that it's exactly what you wanted it to be.

That's awesome man. It came out looking really clean, especially for your first time.

That's what ... oh nevermind.

Looks nice!

Killer man! I think it's just the right size, not too big and not too small. Like it.

dude you and BFAD both have awesome storage bays. By far one of the best I've seen to date.

Great job.

Thanks guys! I'm glad you all like it, I do too.

I'm always late to the compliment party. Looks great! Maybe this will get me motivated to build mine.

Crafty! What a nice and efficient use of good storage space, and you made it to your own liking and ease of use.

Well done Norm Abram!

Sweet storage. I've redrawn mine like 4 times now, looks like I might need a 5th! Really like some of the ideas from yours. At this rate it will never be built! :nerd:

dang ripcord i never thought i would want a cargo box in my truck but after seeing yours I gotta have one! great job!

where did you get that bulb for the mag light?

Do it! Its such a fun project.

And I got that LED from amazon. Use the title in the parts list and search that.

Sweet storage box! I like that it is smaller and tucked away in a corner so it doesn't take up a ton of room like mine does. nice work!

That looks great, unfortunately with the high dollar items I transport on an almost daily basis, I cannot lose the cargo cover...

Did you go that high only to be able to use the mounting location, or is it too shallow to be useful if you stay under that point?

Thanks! Yeah definitely didn't want it to intrude into the real cargo space.

I made it that high for the mounting location.

Actually, I had the box in there for a few days with just the turnbuckles and not using that upper mounting spot. It still felt quite secure. Plus, a shorter box would be less top heavy and do even better with just the two floor tie-downs.

JA build his box similar to how you describe wanting one. Toyota 4Runner Highlander Modifications Cargo Organizer Box
With it still keeping the cargo cover intact.
