Ripcord's 2002 4Runner Sport Ed.

If you're having the front end built might as well throw a locker in it lol :D

BTW.. there's a guy selling a front 7.5 with arb and 4.10s on ttora. For a non add but wouldn't take much to change it to add. ARB RD90 with compressor and non add diff - TTORA Forum

for the right price maybe you can talk him into shipping. You're only prob like 5-7 hours from him

hahahahaha TW win. wells theres not much discussion/BSing in the NM BS thread on here

That's becuase theres like 3 people in NM that own 4runners and are on this site with any regularity..

And I post in the TW thread becuase most of them were THERE TO SEE IT BREAK, NICK! I can't hide things from them becuase they already know about it. lol jk, im sure you'll make the next meet. BTW Gian, you should post that up in the NM 4runner thread.

And Ive decided on a plan of action finally with this diff. Gonna Get a 4.30 diff from ECGS and swap in a good condition 4.30 Elocker. I know its not a huge jump from 4.10s, but then again neither is 31 to 33" tires..

-Plus regearing the Elocker diff to 4.56 would be another $400 at least. Screw that.

I could have sworn you were locked in the rear already...

My e-locker seized up last time I was out and I was dissapointed as to how uncapable the thing was

So what you're saying is you don't want to be open diff buddies anymore?

My elocker is acting funny right now.. These things are temperamental. If I had it my way I'd have an ARB back there.

Well ARBs are way too much money for me. Im going to take apart the actuator motor and clean it up when I get it. To try to prevent it from getting seized up.

All said and done Im looking at about 1k for a slight regear and rear locker, seems decent to me.

haha yea tacos are a little more popular. but i already posted it in this nm thread. hopefully some 4runners can make it

Yea mine drives me nuts, everytime I'm out something else goes wrong with it

Luckily this is the 1st problem I've encountered after having used it pretty hard for almost 2 years. I can hear the motor working when I press the switch but it wont catch and lock. Dunno what the deal is. I just need to take it off and investigate.

Here are some of the pics from the last wheeling trip I went on with TW.

Regarding the diff and this trip.. when it broke, we thought it was the drivers side CV. This is becuase the drivers side CV had completely come apart and slung grease everywhere. We didnt get ANY pics of where I was when I broke it or anything, we just shrugged at the snap and moved on.

It wasn't until I got home and changed the CV to a new napa CV a week later that I found I still had a problem.

Anywho, here's the pics:

Once I got home I looked at the CVs.

Here is the Driver's side one that came apart, I'm just going to take it to my Driveshaft/CV guy and have him put it back together.

Bigfish, I tried to use that CV you gave me. But, when I went to hammer it into the diff I guess I hit it too hard a few times and really F'd up the threads on the axle nut side. Rendering the whole axle pretty much uselss. I'll save it and use it as a core for when I go buy a new axle.

Once I got the new Napa axle in, I went for a test drive around the yard. I was still having binding and clicking when I was in 4wd and at one point it locked up the drivers side wheel when I was idling along. The wheel slid for a foot and the truck came to a stop.

After that I knew something was wrong with the diff, it had to be. So I pulled into the garage and pulled the front diff drain plug. First thing I hear is the distinct sound of metal chunks falling into the plastic drain pan.. Gear teeth.

Cancel my plans that afternoon, this diff is coming out!

----------------

Update on the diff, I have placed an order through East Coast Gear Supply for a 4.30 front diff. I'll send them mine in the packaging they send the new on in.

I have already also ordered a 4.30 Elocked rear diff, I will be modifying my current axle housing and making my own circuit for the elocker controls.

Stay tuned.. :D

WELL MAYBE IF YOU'D PLAN THE TRIPS AROUND ALL MY BABY APPTS AND MY JACKED UP WORK SCHEDULE I'D BE THERE TO SEE IT BREAK, JIM! :bigok:

Your luck has been just awesome lately, hasn't it. On a positive note, you'll be netting some nice upgrades after all this is said and done.

That 4.10 to 4.30 swap will make your truck feel pretty much like it did stock, before you went to bigger tires. I considered doing the same swap when I was doing my e-locker but I didn't feel like pulling the front diff. In your case though........

One question... what was it about the diff breaking that caused the CV to pull apart like that?

These guys like sundays, idk why! I have every sunday off though so you don't see me complaining.

My luck is horrendous lately, Im due for a string of good luck any day now..

Back to stock is exactly where I want to be, I don't want super low gears. Im hoping for a slight MPG and power bump, nothing major. I found a guy with a spare set of 4.10 front gears ready to install and decided to pretend I didnt see that and continue with getting an elocker in 4.30, lol.

IDK why that CV came apart, maybe it was just over extended at the same time the diff broke. It will forever be a mystery.

Dude, your luck lately... Sorry man!

Oh well, broken parts = new mods!! :D

Digging the fairlead, too. I was thinking it might look weird without a winch yet, but seeing how good yours came out, I like the look.

it could be worse... i mean you could have been stuck on the trail and had those broken teeth chew chit up in there and lock you up good... but hey now you get a locker and some new gears

Think of it this way.....things could always be worse. A busted diff or cv, etc. would be minimal to the likes of totalling your 4runner.

I don't know how much of a difference your feel going from 4.10 to 4.30. When I did the elocker swap on my 4runner with 4.30's front and rear I didn't really notice any difference. Maybe, you will since your 4runner is modified heavier than mine.
