Ripcord's 2002 4Runner Sport Ed.

On my android app it says "multi" that's the button for quoting multiple posts.

What app do you have?

Like they said, multi-quote. If you are on a computer, there are three options at the bottom right of everyones posts, the middle one is multi-quote.

Click that multi-quote tab on all the posts you want to quote and click the Quote tab on the last one.

891s will be fine with a steel bumper

Much easier now with the multi quote than having to respond to multiple times.. and perfect thanks for the reply.. hoping to get my build going soonn.. looking at your build thread actually inspired me in getting a 4runner instead of a jeep.. truck is gorgeous

Do you think it would be too stiff with 891 coils and 60027 shocks instead of the 60028 for comfort ride? I want my truck to be level like yours. Not a fan of the rear end being higher than the front an i forsure dont want it to sag?

Thanks.

I honestly dont know. never had a steel bumper. My guess would be that it will be fine seeing as those are made for extra weight.

yeah true what my worry is that the 891 coils and the 60027 shocks are both for extra weight that it will end up being too stiff. Thank you for your reply

Re-Built Rear Upper Control Arms

|May 27th, 2013|

With Moab just a few days away, I finally bit the bullet and got my rear links built the right way.

------------------

My old links were 1/4" longer than stock and I still had some vibes with them, these new ones are 3/4" longer than stock. Stock is 12 1/4", these were 12 1/2" and the new ones are 13".

Build is here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1217030-post736.html

They were built from 2" diameter 0.25" wall chromoly tubing for the bushings ends and 1.25" diameter 0.120" wall for the arm of the link.

The problem with them is that having poly bushings on each end made them TOO strong. The stock links had some rotation in them through the rubber bushings and the solid rod. These would not have the flex I needed and could even break the control arm mounts if I used them off road.

The "old" ones.

So I bought some new parts..
3/4" thread 2" wide Currie Johnny Joints. ($45 each)
3/4" Thread 1" diameter bungs with Jam nuts ($15 each)

Determining where I needed to cut..

Cut:

Got the Bungs TIG welded in, then ground and painted the links. I also bought a tub of suspension grease to really lube up the bushings before I installed them.

Bump Stops.. and other Moab Prep.

First thing to talk about is extended bump stops. A while back I found some extended bump stops on a 4runner at the local you pull it yard. But even though they were longer than the stock ones, I still needed longer ones as my shocks were compressed before the bump stops were reached.

The stock Bump stops compared to the ones I found at the junkyard on a 4runner they had.

I found a thread recently that had a way to get even longer bump stops at the junkyard from other vehicles.
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/134139-junkyard-rear-bump-stops.html

So off to the yard I went to find the stock bump stops from a Chevy Blazer.

These are what I found:

Installed:

Hopefully these work!

Other MOAB prep:
-Greased driveshaft
-Removed Sway bars
-Topped off all fluids
-Checked tire pressure
-Got an alignment
-Wash
-Bleed brakes
-Replace TRD throttle body gasket (it was leaking)
-Replace PCV Valve and grommet (gained like 2 mpg back for $15)

Everytime I look at this thread, my build list gets longer, and my wallet hurts more and more.

Are the redesigned UCA's adjustable on truck now, or will one end need to be unbolted and pulled down to be adjusted, then reinstalled?

Why did you use two different styles of weld in bungs? The arms look awesome, those are on my list. Have fun dude, we will all be sitting around twiddling our thumbs waiting for the pictures.

Thanks dude.

They need to be unbolted on the joint side.

You can make them adjustable on truck if you use the joints on both ends and have opposing thread directions on each side. making a turnbuckle basically. They sell the joints in both LH and RH threads so it is very possible.

The first ones I ordered from currie enterprises as a bung and jam nut combo for $25 that said "sold as set". Being that their bungs were double the price of anyone else, I assumed that meant it came with two of each.. for a set.

But no, it only came with one I found out after I received my shipment and called a very rude salesman.

So I ordered a second bung from someone else for half the price and vowed to never order from Currie again.

Are the arm tubes 1.5" .120"wall DOM tubing? If so, how well did the 1" diameter bungs fit? Wouldn't that leave a .25" gap between the bung and inside wall of the tube?

Oh dang, i would be pissed too. Can i ask who you got the second one from? Not the first time i have heard less than satisfactory reports about Currie's sales people.

Ruffstuff, and Theirs was better made than Currie. Also I found a place that's sells curries johnny joints for less than Currie does.

Alright, I got back from moab yesterday..

As some of you know, my rear differential failed on the 4th day on Z-turn on Moab Rim. Rough luck, had to drive 15 miles back to camp going 10 miles an hour then trailer the rig home.

At Arches Nat'l park

Top of Strike Ravine:

This is right about where my diff blew up. passenger rear started to climb the ledge, started spinning and slipped down, as soon as the tire hit the ground again it all snapped.

The Uhaul straps dont even fit over 33's..
