I can't fault your logic and I know you are catching a lot of flack over this and what it all boils down to is you gotta do what you gotta do.

I think by the time you strip it down and sell it and the parts, you should be able to pick up a decent eco ride and a new beater. If you don't want/ need the room the 4Runner affords, then I would look at an early pickup. You won't get alot of creature comforts, but the build-ability of those rigs is endless.

I have to join in and say that I have greatly enjoyed reading thru your thread since purchasing my 98 earlier this year.

And the final shameless plug, I want to get in line for your front lift, if it is not already claimed. :bolt: Sorry, I had to throw that in there.

I agree with The Rip man. I bought my 4Runner which was pristine, with the idea of getting it a little dirty while using it for fishing, bird hunting, camping and dog hauling. But then I joined this site and got the offroad bug, took it wheeling ONCE, banged it up pretty good, and I have felt guilty since. And I haven't sunk nearly the money Rip has into it as his. So he should sell his beautiful 4Runner(probably miss it terribly) but a more fuel efficient fun car to drive around, save some money and buy a dedicated trail rig for fun on weekends and to take it on wheeling trips that it is built for that your 4Runner wasn't. Good luck man, I'd do the same but I'm just not that into wheeling like you are. Call me a poser, but I want a truck that looks the part, but is too pretty to scratch up.

I went the buggy route first, and don't get me wrong I've had a great time with it but it's hard realize the expense that goes with it till your in the game. Not to mention the small weekend spur of the moment camping/wheelin' trips that you miss out on because it's a pain in the ass to load everything and tow.

That's why I'm building a 3rd gen....just like yours.

Sorry for going off topic but is that a 3rd gen pickup with a YJ grille????

I can't say I agree with you here! The first time I wrecked my stock rear bumper on the trail, I wasn't too upset as it gave me a reason to upgrade. However, when I crunched my door, I was pissed. When I later crunched my front fender, I was also pissed. It was not easier the second time around. I like mint and shiny things. lol

Mines a gasser. I do wish i got a diesel though. TDI's with a chip and exhaust can be very fun IMHO.

The Jetta is very fun, just rolled over 300k miles yesterday, had the chip in for 220k miles now. I figured that MK3 was diesel tho, guess not, they are pretty cheap now if you can find them.

I cant get a diesel, they arent fun enough.. unless you get a 1 ton truck with a diesel bigger than my bed.

Good to know about the VWs, but I like the leather in the Audi

I have a 3/4 ton Cummins Diesel Pickup, The jetta is way more fun, and way cheaper to drive around.
