Lift

(5-20-2010): Called Toytec and ordered my 3” OME lift from a nice man named Darrick, got a forum member discount too.
Toytec Lifts: 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner
I ordered the ‘Complete OME suspension’ Kit.
I specified for the 883 front coils and Nitrocharger shocks (Pre-assembled and w/out topout spacer) and 891 rear coils with HD Nitrocharger rear shocks.

The total was $820 after the discount.

-A few weeks later, I also ordered a 1” diff drop and a Panhard Bar drop bracket.


(5-26-2010): Complete lift arrived, even with rear shocks on ‘back order’.

(5-29-2010): Lift installed with help of two friends.
-Time: 7 Hours (including 2 trips to Auto Zone to rent spring compressor and torque wrench.
-Tools: Socket set, floor jack, jack stands.

Stereo/ CB Adventures

One of the first upgrades I did to my 4Runner was the old Cobra 29 LTD CB radio. I also had a huge 4’ Wilson whip antenna mounted on a rooftop magnetic mount.

Just one year later and it was time for a change of decoration.

My dad bought a new 1DIN Kenwood Excelon KDC-X794 for my B-day.
The Kenwood is HD and Satellite radio ready and has an auxiliary USB port.

I was originally going to try to fit the Cobra CB AND the new stereo into the 2DIN slot for the stock radio.
That didn’t work, the Cobra was too deep.

I had to get a new, smaller CB unit and figured it was a nice time to change up the antenna also.
I traded in the Cobra for a Uniden 520XL CB unit, a PA speaker, firestik CB antenna, and rear quarter panel mount.

The old setup didn't look very clean, so I moved the CB to the ashtray and bought a stereo pocket.

Here is what I used for mounting the CB in the ashtray:
Parts:
Coax cable L-joint
(2) Zip-ties
CB mounting bracket (should be included with the CB)

Tools:
Coping saw
Sandpaper

Wiring:
The radio was installed by a shop on the last setup. This was not really necessary, the wiring is fairly simple.
All you need to do is tap the 12V ignition with an add-a-fuse, take that to the radio, then take a ground from the radio to a ground point.

The only ones that fit there are the Uniden 520, Cobra 19, and Midland 1001 models

Remove the ashtray and cut out the back of the cubby. Be sure to not cut off the two openings on the top part, you will need those.

Use the L-fitting for the Coax cable so it can fit farther back in and zip-tie the CB bracket to the openings in the top of the ashtray cubby.

Took the light fixture from the ashtray housing, then I put wax paper covering ash tray light fixture:

I drilled a hole in the stereo pocket and super glued the light mount on top of it:

Complete. You can see the light in the pocket too.

Andymod 2.0
AndyMod 2.0. ABS Remains Active. - YotaTech Forums

First up was the fix to the most annoying thing about 4runners, the VSC/ TRAC system, and the glorious AndyMod 2.0!

The VSC is what prevents sideways vehicle movement (ie. donuts, drifting). And the TRAC is a remedy for an open differential (when one wheel has no traction/in the air and gets all the power). The TRAC, which stops the spinning wheel, also hinders donuts). The TRAC system is basically a wannabe limited slip differential.

VSC: Vehicle stability control
TRAC: Traction control

Note: Without the andymod; When you are in 4x4 with the transfer case locked, the VSC is automatically disabled, and the TRAC is still active. This is the ideal setup when offroading.
Andymod is just for fun.

For this mod, I ordered an OEM fog light switch ($8.00)

Disabled DRL’s
2002 4Runner: DRL Disable With On/Off Capability - YotaTech Forums

Next, I disabled the 2nd most annoying thing about 4runners, the DRL’s (daytime running lamps)

On the 2002’s, it is as simple as cutting the pin 12 black/ yellow wire on the DRL module and capping the loose ends. You can also wire in a switch if you want to be able to turn them back on, but I was done with them for good.

With the Deckplate and ISR combined, I noticed faster throttle response, deeper engine noise, and minimal power gains.

I picked up this 4" white deck plate from 'Taylor Marine' in Albuquerque for $9.95
You will also need 6 screws and some waterproof sealant.

The ISR is also an inexpensive upgrade. On 2002’s, all you need is a section of exhaust pipe that is 5.65in long and 2.75in outside diameter and about 2ft of vacuum hose. I painted mine with black high temp frame paint.

Plasti-Dip: (Don't need to remove emblems)

Looking back now, I should have gone with Plasti-dip. This way still works out nicely though.

-For removal, use a hair dryer and fishing line, then goo-gone the excess adhesive.
-Sandpaper emblems with 1000 grit sandpaper.
-Use 1-2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint. Let dry for 2+ hours.
-For re-installation, use 1/2" double sided molding tape from pep boys for $4.99.

Grip Tape Door Sills:
I used a spare roll of 2" industrial grade grip tape.

For each side, I cut out a section that was 2-feet 3" long. I cut 2/3" of that strip and used it on the door jamb. I used the other, bigger, strip of grip tape on the actual door sill

I also swapped the OME 891's for LC 8 Wraps.
The 891's were too stiff for me, so I am going to try a coil I know is very comfy. I will just have to deal with the 4.5" lift I have gotten from the new 8 wraps though.

Snowboarding road trip to Keystone, CO. Averaged 18mpg with full cargo and 4 guys (65-70 mph).
In this photo, there are 5 snowboards. We had to take the bindings off of one to get them all up there!

Smoked LED tail lights:

Ordered a set of LED tail lights off Ebay. I bought the ones that have a black housing with a clear lens. Total was $140.00 shipped. I also sold my old tail lights for $80.

To smoke the tail lights, I first sandpapered the lenses with 1000 grit sandpaper. Then, I used a spray can of lens tint, let it dry, then clear coated them.

Purchased from eBay, such a good selection there. Got the EXACT color combo I wanted.

For my decals, I moved them down a bit from the normal spot.
With the Gas cap on one side and the CB antenna on the other (both at the same height), I had no choice.

With the 891's, I hated them, WAY too stiff. I still have the heavy duty rear OME shocks. Getting some nice Bilstiens when I can afford them.

I think I would keep the sealer strips stock color....just my 2 cents....BTW, I do notice the rake, however, my Tundra Struts are lower even with the topout spacer.....Kinda wish I had the extra dough for the OME stuff....but got the Tundra stuff for a steal compared to what Toytec could sell me their stuff for with the shipping costs! Once again man, NICE RIG! :driving:

New windshield / B&M install / Offroading

In January, my windshield got a HUGE crack through it. I had existing chips (one big one that was starred). I was driving to snowboarding in the morning, windshield was cold, had the defrost going, hit a pothole.. BAM. It wasn't blocking line of sight, but it was annoying.

Here is a picture from the day before I had it changed.
The yellow is the crack, the orange circles are the chips. The cracks stemmed from the main chip.

My insurance deductible was $100.

*I also removed all of my decals after I got home.

BigFishAllDay and I met up for some wrenching and offroading.
He is a really cool guy and is very patient and knowledgeable about 4runners.

He has done 2 transmission cooler installs on 3rd gen 4Rrunners (make that 3 now). Needless to say, I was in good company.

First, we installed the B&M 70268.

Magnefine In-line filter.

UPDATE 5-20-2012
After changing the radiator, the B&M cooler is now in series with the build in trans cooler in the radiator.
Hot from trans > Radiator cooling > External cooler > Filter > back to trans.

After the install was done and we cleaned up. It was time to head out. We went to a local off road park.
BigFishAllDay ended up taking most of the pictures.

Thanks! I really need a better overall picture though. I took about 6 hours to do the LED's and move the CB. I really took my time and made sure it was right.

Actually, after I got it all back together, I had to tear into the gauges again because the hot spots were not quite gone yet.

by the way did those new colors for your clock work out?

I did that today, I meant to PM you or post in the clock color thread but I forgot, haha. The 'Lavender' swatch was the PERFECT neutral white color, just a bit too dark (not transparent enough). The 'Medium Lavender' swatch was perfect transparency, but left a Sea Green color on the clock.

I'm going to stick with the darker Lavender swatch, my Head Unit has a clock on it anyway.
