rkntoy's Really Slow Dual Case Install

Cranking ahead. Hopefully next week? No one said they wanted anything specific for pics while I am doing this so......

Finally got the replacement car for after doing this for my wife's birthday. I don't recommend totaling the wife's car as a birthday present. And I can feel most of the end of my finger finally.

Only part that gave me pause was grinding the reduction box case to accept the 4.7 gearset. Sooooo - it went off to the machine shop. I like how it turned out.

I like where this is going. We don't seem to see a lot of transfer case modifications on the 3rd gens but (humble opinion) lower transfer case gearing is one of the most useful offroad mods possible.

This is my 3rd 4x4 that I have put dual cases in and I would agree. Pretty excited about this one as it will be my lowest crawl ratio yet at 205 to 1. Definitely adding a hand throttle for use while crawling to avoid blipping the gas pedal - lesson I learned the hard way with my first dual case setup

I've only gone as far as a single 4.7 behind a 22RE/W56 but man that made a huge difference!

It will be cool to see your shifter setup when you get it all figured out.

Sweet! What tires are those? Super Swampers?

Sorry if I missed this, but are you running stock gears?

Also, glad you are making progress on dual case install.

The tires are Mile Star Patagonia MT. Only reason I bought them is they still had the fuzzies on them and the guy was desperate for money.

Yupper - still running stock-ish gears (4.30). Slapped in a complete front with 4.30 gears and an Aussie locker that I picked up cheap. Going over mountain passes pulls me down to 3rd gear but I can still go 75-80 on the flats.

Well they are in. Ran in to a couple questions assembling and Trail-Gear was very helpful and responsive. Had some questions on the triple sticks and RADesigns was great!

My only nit on the Trail-Gear stuff is this - the skid/crossmember...

I have a plan though.

My buddy just got that same crossmember, and I couldn't believe how low it hanged down! He wasn't happy about that at all.

I am not happy either. I does hang really low. The other problem with it is that it puts a down angle toward the back that angles my triple sticks backwards.

After thinking I could fix it last night I think I am giving up on it. I have big wheeling plans starting in less than a month with lots of things to wrap up so time to mod this thing is not going to happen.

Is there a gap between the frame and the mount. From pics it looks like it's sagging. Hard to tell tho

Nope. Take a peek at the pic - the mount is up against the frame rail. And with how the pan sides are bent at an angle up towards the frame mounts you can't get it up any higher as it sticks out past the outside of both frame rails. With how the thing is bent and angled there is no easy way to modify it to tuck it up more. I can take more pics if someone wants them.

So far thumbs up on RADesign and Trail-Gear adapters/gear set. Thumbs down on crossmember/skid plate.

How much room do you have to raise the cases if you were able to? I'm curious how much potential room there is between the cases and your transmission tunnel?

I just went and looked at my dual case crossmember and I have the same gap. Your right it's a bit much. I doubt that clearance will be needed fore vibration/movement. When I had the single case crossmember it was almost touching the case. I'm sure I will smash it on a few rocks and bend it up a bit.

OK - modified it to tuck it up some more. Got one of the heavy-duty transmission mounts from Trail-Gear and cut off the front mount off the crossmember. Then bent the front part of the skid/crossmember up. Also cut the wings off where the crossmember drops down from the frame and moved the whole crossmember up and made it level so it doesn't tilt to the back any more. Also shortened up the back transmission mount to reduce the clearance between the t-case and the crossmember.
