RL's Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Review

Thanks for all the comments on the SA's and Revo's. Seems like a coin toss since the prices are the same, but the tread on the SA's and sidewall construction make them seem better for off road, so that's probably the way I'll go.

I might add that my Revos always tracked straight and I never had that with my BFG's , it also may be like that because they are a square shouldered tire like the BFG.

So are you saying that the BFG's never tracked straight or that you never had that problem with the BFG's?

I was pretty sure I was going with the SA's but now I'm thinking that the Revo's might be the happy median between the SA's (tough off-road, great in snow) and the OEM Dunlops I have now (smooth, quiet ride, good MPG). I just don't want to sacrifice too much of the on-road manners. One of the things that I love about my 4R vs. my old GC's is that the handling, steering response, and road noise are substantially lower than the GC's. I would hate to give that up, and maybe I won't have to.

What I really need to do is quite beating around the bush, just buy a set of tires, and live with it!

Decisions.....:bash:

I am looking to sell them to someone kind of local, ie colorado or NM because I don't want to pay for shipping. If I can't sell them then I will use them this winter and won't worry too much about the mileage because the 4runner will be paid off in July. Yea!!!. I would rather have the revo's on there but the sa will do. I just kind of go with the flow. Don't want to lose too much money and I do realize that they are a good tire. Don't work too hard.:p

Thats the thing with trying to sell tires , plenty of buyers , but the shipping usually kills the deal.

One other note about my Revo's is that I had them balance when I bought them. I have had no issues with them not staying in balance . I did have them rebalanced 1 time only because I had the white letters flopped to the inside so they had to. So basically they balanced them twice in 48k miles.

I just got back from Discount Tire pricing both the GY SA and the Revo.

I was talking to the manager and I told him that I narrowed it down to those two tires. He said that they both perform well and there is only a $2 difference between tires, but that they consistently see the SA coming back completely worn at ~30k miles, even though they have a 50k mile warranty. Maybe a softer tread compound is one of the reasons why the SA performs so well in the snow.

For those of you who have had the SA on for a while, how has your experience been with the tread life?

I have about 10,000 miles on mine and they are running great with little wear.

No idea what the guy was talking about, but then again, how many people are properly maintaining their tires with rotation, balancing, and proper tire pressures?

More to it than just the tires.

I have seen people swear by Michelin LTX A/Ts and mine pretty much stunk with decreasing traction (noticably) after about 15-20,000 miles.

After reading craploads of reviews myself it gets more confusing. Like I stated with the Revo some snows they performed really well in and other snow that were hard packed and high moisture content they did worse. I did find and ran them at 40 psi which provided perfect and optimum gas milage.

One thing I though of was I have a brand new Revo spare . 2 1/2 years old. never used . I maybe be able to use that 1 for 1 of my four and replace the best of the 4 for the spare . IS that a bad idea ??

I don't think it would be bad at all. Car and especially LT tires seem to be very stable. The spare is protected from the sun. Sure, I would use it as one of the 4.

On a motorcycle NO, on the 4Runner, just fine.

I'm going to pull it off this weekend to see what it looks like . (if time allows it.)

UPDATE 8/9/08- pulled the spare down , the rim looks like crap from salt , mud , scratched,ect... !!. So I would have to have the just switch the tire out.

After reading the reviews on DT tire and TR about GY SA's , Revo's , Mich, LTX AT2 , and others , EVERYTHING we talk about , gas milage , wet traction , tracking , snow , mud , tire wear , tracking ect.... are mentioned in ALL the AT tire reviews at some point , so my conclusion is just get what you want . On the boards here is a good reference , but as I have learned there are so many variable's involved you probably get a good idea , but not exactly the same results , just like the reviews on TR and DT

Buying SA's

After reading all I could, and thinking about this purchase probably way too much, I just pulled the trigger and ordered the Wrangler SA's in stock size (265/70/16) P metric. I should have them on next week, and will post my initial impressions after I get them on and off road.

Can't wait to get these on my 4Runner!

You must have an SR5.

Yes, it's an 07 SR5 that I just got a few months ago. This will be my second upgrade. The first was new front speakers that are awesome.

Getting some as well this week

Some recent torrential rains we received spurred me on to get the tires I'll need before the snow starts. I'm currently running the stock Dunlops that still have a lot of tread on them with only 20K miles but they're just horrible in the rain on the highway. I don't plan on finding out what they're like in snow.

Anyway, I went shopping Friday and the shop recommended Michelin LTX AT2 as a clear first choice for all-around and the Silent Armors as a close second above all the other choices. Said the SA's would be better in the snow and off-road of course. They also really like the Long Trail's but said I'd like the SA's better.

The SA's look great and will cost me around $730 for 4 (265/70/17) after discount and there's the $40 rebate from Good Year. Not too bad I suppose. I'll keep the stock spare since it was never used and has full tread on it. The Long Trails are $50 less per tire but I think I'll stick with the SA's.

Are you going with P metric or C or ??

I think the SAs are much more your tire given the back country of Maine and the "occasional" Nor'easter you all get. You get off of some of those main streets there and you want a strong tire that is going to move you through. Personally, in that situation, I want a severe weather rated tire - especially when that ice forms up.

They also really like the Long Trail's but said I'd like the SA's better. [/B][ /QUOTE]

The Long Trails are a crap tire. I have seen a lot of them on newer trucks as OEM tires with not a lot of mileage on them looking like they have been on the truck for years. This backs up my experience with them on a 1998 GMC Sierra I bought new years ago. Absolutely piece of shyte tire that lost traction IN DRY WEATHER after about 16,000 miles and the ABS engaged with NORMAL breaking. Could have been the truck too, but amazingly those problems resolved with the LTX A/Ts I replaced them with.

That is a pretty damned good price right there. I'd opt for a spare as well though and rotate it through twice yearly.

P I tink? Since my off-roading is only occasionally and I really don't want a harsh ride. The code on them was 113T OWL. I'll probably put them black side out.

What does the new spare really get me? The difference in size is negligable if it's used for emergency spare only and the one I have was never used by the previous owner so I'd be throwing away a perfectly good tire. I'm guessing they wouldn't give me anything for it since it's a 4-year old tire.

Seems I'd get a little more life out of the tires but spend around $200 more. Is there something else it gains me?

I am just a person that does not mix tires and tire treads. Not something I have ever done, nor am I likely to do.

The owner's manual also has a receommended rotational pattern that includes the spare.

And should it go "POP" on a dark and empty road in the backwoods.........

I see it either way, and I figure that you are getting a decent deal for the tires, you might as well complete the package.

Im the same way . Only I don't rotate my spare . Its a same sized Revo , but the rim looks like hell !!! So I'll buy just the 4 tires. If I go with Revos I could get buy with buying 3 and using the spare tire and put the best on of the 4 on the crap rim underneath.

But think about cars with those small doughnuts with a tread pattern that certainly doesn't match. I understand with 4WD you want tires of similar size and preferably the same tread but it's a spare, not something you're going to drive on long distances if you're not rotating it with the rest. The size seems well within tolerances, especially if it's on the front and you're in 2wd. I wonder more about the age of the tire if I do this repeatedly.

So what do you do next time you get new tires with an old tire as a spare assuming you got Revos yet again? I'm guessing that's why Toyota recommends rotating the spare.

I don't know, just seems like an unnecessary additional expense.
