Road Bull's 2002 SR-5 timeline.

Agreed, I'm in midst of installing my Sonoran steel full kit, but did LCA, LBJ, tie rods, etc at same time.

Awesome! You will be stoked for sure. That is a well thought out lift. Post plenty of pics, here if you want, once you get it hammered out man.

That is being thorough. Mine went something like this:

"Babe the rig needs new shocks, struts and springs"

Wife: "How much is that gonna be?"

"About 1100. I can do it myself for about 2/3 of that"

Wife: "Really? That would be great"

So I ordered the Toytec/Eiback lift and SPC control arms. Did the work on a weekend when she was away for work. Lifted and running boards removed. She gets home and looks at me.

Wife: "Umm, the truck looks a little taller"

After I got done laughing I spent the next 30 minutes explaining to her what a lift is and why I felt it was needed on "her" rig. She hemmed and hawed a bit then finally took it for a drive. She was stoked.

A few days ago I was stuck doing a remodel on our guest bath on Saturday. She took the rig out to do some climbing. It's been a really wet year here in Cali so far. She gets back and the rig is COVERED in mud. She rallied it hard.

When I asked her where she went she tells me the Buttermilks. It's about 6 miles in on a dirt road that has major wash outs from the last storm. There are usually at least 200 people there on a winter weekend. She was one of two other rigs that made it. Now she thinks the lift in the best thing since sliced bread. lol

That is High-Larry-Us!! And well played I might add. And many times an upgrade is within the ballpark of what it would cost to replace with OEM, especially if you are the one doing the labor, so why not right? And that was smarter than trying to convince someone that they should lift their rig when it is not their idea. And it sounds like she really digs it too. Everyone wins.

I wish that I had been doing research about rear aftermarket bumpers when I rear ended in 06/2015. I stressed that I wanted an OEM, not close to OEM rear bumper that would rust in a year. They agreed and got an OEM rear bumper, or so they said. If I were to do it again, I would have just gotten some sort of aftermarket swing out situation and paid the difference. So... if I am ever in that situation again, THAT is exactly what I will do.

It was my understanding that the 5 star 16' wheels fit over the tundra calipers. Is this not the case?

Build looks great. Keep up your good work.

Thank you for the kind words. The 5 stars do fit just fine and I ran them for a while with my TBU. The 5 stars are some of my favorite OEM wheels for sure. I also like the 17" Split Spoke Tunda/Sequoia Wheels. I just came across a good deal and made an aesthetic change to have 5 like wheels.

The only time you would run into issues is, lets say you have a flat front tire. The standard spare rim will not work with the TBU. This just means that you would need to first take a rear wheel off, put the spare in the rear location, and put the 5 star on the front to accommodate the TBU. That's all. It's not the end of the world, but it is an extra step. But for that matter, you could simply keep an eye on CL for when someone decides to go aftermarket and unload their OEM wheels. You can get a pretty sweet deal and have all matching wheels, and or, some extra wheels, or... sell what you don't need to someone else. Hope that helps.

Hey man, truck is looking great. I just got my Kings as well.

Congrats! I SAW that! That is bad ass! Your build is one of the first on here that really got my attention when I joined this forum. I love black 4runners and yours is super clean. You have great documentation on your build page and excellent pictures of your part of the world too. I believe I picked your brain about some sort of suspension question very early on.

So, what do you think about the Kings? Is it a big difference to you? What weight coils did you end up getting? I have 600# on mine, but I have yet to add my winch, so I will see where I end up and how it feels after that. I know you are running 33s, but what size spare have you got wedged in under your rig?

I like the mass update! A floor jack and a block of wood does wonders for taking the heavy skids on and off the truck. But I've been there before where I didn't have access... I had to put my 45lbs gas tank skid back on using my knees, a cooler, and a lot of swearing...

HAHAHA... Thanks. But you are right, so much swearing. I just need to suck it up and get some 6 ton jack stands and a good floor jack. I have been delaying this purchase as the weather has been a complete moron as of late, for the most part. Things are beginning to clear up. I just cant do work in my low ceiling garage post lift. mengh... (grumpy cat face). So, work that I do now needs to be done, ideally when rain is not falling on me. During my skid install I was laughing at myself as I was running out of daylight and trying to use whatever bullshit was at hand. The spay cans were my dumbest idea for sure before I remembered the bottle jack.

I get to do my first armored oil change this weekend if the weather cooperates. I can't wait. How has your rig been treating you? Still liking your rear swing out?

These are what I got shortly after getting my rig. They've been put to the test many times since then. The jack stands are tall and stable. The floor jack lowers super slow and isn't twitchy at all. For the price I'm pretty damn impressed with both.

Buy me

Me too

I bought the 25001-151 for Tacoma from the Truck Shop for $950 plus tax & install. There is a King group buy that just started this week in the GB section of the forum. The goal is 15% of retail. On most websites these are retailing for $1050 so I think I'm getting a decent/good deal at $950 with no shipping.

I believe these are the standard 650 coil. I haven't heard of a 600. Did you get the same part #? Where is the weight stamped.

So far they ride great. I did lose .5" inch compared to the billies but my 33s fit just fine.

I don't plan on adding any more weight. No winch or belly skids.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have some tundra wheels, I was going to go with 16' ko2's. 265/75/16s are cheaper than their 17 inch counterpart. But I do love tundra wheels on a 3rd gen. It's an endless debate in my mind.

The Tacoma and 4Runner have a different top plate orientation. When you have a shock with a stud at the top you simply rotate the plate. When you install a heim top shock with a Tacoma top hat in a 4Runner the heim will be rotated away from side movement.

I would call king and ask if there is a different top hat for a 4Runner because Radflo and Icon have different top hats for 4Runner and Tacoma.

I got my 6 ton jackstands at Advanced Auto for like $30 using an online coupon code. For a floor jack the high lift, low profile one at harbor freight is great. It goes high enough to lift the 4Runner, but low enough to still get under my Supra.

I don't know about the savage skids, but the shrockworks ones have a hole cut in them for the drain plug. They collect all the drippings from the filter and the very last drips out of the oil pan and will continue to drip for weeks to come after your oil change. I always change my oil, pull into the street and hose off the skid plates so I'm not leaving oil spots everywhere I park...

Everything's still great with my truck. Love the rear swing out, it finished off the truck, the last piece of the puzzle kinda armor/body wise.

You sir are a 4Runner God, you seem to know every single thing about them. Great asset to the community!

So I ordered mine through Total Automotive Performance. They had an option for 4runners, so that's what I went with. Although, half the people I know who run them have just used the Tacoma Kings. I am not sure there is a difference.

My part number I ordered was:

KING OEM Performance Series (25001-333EXT)
1996 - 2002 Toyota 4Runner
2.5 Front Coilovers IFP
Extended Travel for use with UCA

I got pretty much the same deal. When I ordered them through TAP, I let them know it was for my 2002 4runner with a winch and aftermarket front bumper. They didn't have any specifics as to selecting a specific coil when ordering. I said that I thought I might need at least a 650# coil, but maybe even a 700# coils. I asked TAP to relay my specifics when the passed along the order to King to be drop shipped, so that they could build a coilover that would be most appropriate for my weight.

There is, as far as I am aware, no notation on my order slip that indicated what coils they ended up using. King made no communication with me before shipment. All correspondence was through TAP. This was a little annoying in this day and age. I had to request updates because all I got was that the order was passed along to be processed. Further inquiries were answered with an apology from TAP for the delay. It wasn't really a TAP issue that was causing the delay, but I had no point of contact once my order was processed.

So when I got them, I didn't know as there wasn't anything jumping out at me. Only when I was installing them and I mentioned it to my friend helping me did he point out a small white 600 painted on the coil. At that point I was like, well, I guess King thought that I should have 600# coils... lol.

I did bring them up about an inch, and that was a complete guess to bring it up to about a 2.5" lift up front. It worked out. I hope I don't have to preload it too much in the future to maintain the lift post winch install.

I didn't see markings on your pics so maybe they are on the rear of your coil. If you figure it out, let me know.

Big shout out to Chim for the hook up on a non cracked air filter intake box, and a non rusted trailer hitch! Man, he has a beautiful 4runner! But now I feel like I want to upgrade to 285s and get a rear swing out... So... thanks for that. lolololololololo. It was cool to connect with someone cool from the forum.

A few weeks ago I noticed that I had cracked my air box somehow and it was bugging the crap out of me. I only noticed that it was broken when I was changing air filters. I temporarily fixed it with duct tape. But that kind of fix does not set my mind at ease.

So today I had time and enough weather compliance to swap themy out and clean the MAF while I was at it. Now I can breathe easy and obsess over when the next big tire sale is. Usually Discount Tire Direct on ebay runs a October and March sale ($100 off per $400 worth of tires) so you can get $200 off per set of 4 if you are a jedi. But so far, these aren't the sales I am looking for **waves hand**

I think I will save my fuel filter for tomorrow.

So my little trip down to see Chim down in OR and pick up an air box intake that he had got me thinking about adding some 285s.

I took advantage of the twice a year $100 cupon sale DT does through ebay. By ordering two separate orders, you can get $200 off with no tax and free shipping. So 4 BFG KO2s =$708.

Keeping my 265/75/16s till I am sure that like the bigger shoes. Proportionately, these larger 285s remind me of 265s before my lift.

Now I am thinking about a Savage swing out rear bumper...hahahaha. It never ends.

But for now, I am digging how beefy these things are. Ermahgerd! And for now, no rubbing driving on pavement, offroad might be another story, but we'll see. I would rather not have to add a BL if I don't have to.

Hey, do you get any tire rub to frame upon backing to the left (driver's side)?

I think I am getting a little. It's pretty minor and only at full lock.

I haven't had any rubbing whatsoever.. It may be because my coils are at the full 3" lift... not sure..

Bump for a nice rig.

Did you figure out the rear bumper question yet?

So.. When and if I do a rear swing away, it will be a 4x Innovations. It is a big investment for sure, well, for me anyway. I would look to get the swing away, a single jerry can, hi-lift mount, ditch light cut outs, and a fold down tray. Peripheral to this I would also like to get 861s, and Sonoran Steel Poly body mounts. I really like Chim 's rig with his 4X Innovations rear action going on. His rig is Saaaweeet!

A small part of me is thinking about going back to 265/75/16s to just make things easier. I like the look and feel of the 285s, but if I didn't buy a rear swing out, I would have a lot more funds for recovery gear and whatnot. Decisions, decisions...

Decisions, decisions...

Tell me about it. I've been looking at tires and rims for a week straight. I'm going bigger but I could stick with my 16" rims. Then I could put that money towards the swingout. Or I could get the 17" rims and the tires I really want(Nitto Ridge Grappler) So many things to try and budget but still get my rig where I want it to be.

One of the best things about this site is the willingness of everyone to bounce ideas and opinions around. We even manage to do it without being asses for the most part. lol
