rochmpr Rev. 4 - Broke (Build) Thread

Had the chance to stop by and meet bimrunner yesterday and check out his runner. Thanks to that, I didn't sleep very good last night, I tried counting truck parts, but it didn't work. Anyway, thanks to bimrunner for talking and letting my look and his truck and ask several questions. But, now after researching tires, I am left a little stumped. Was thinking about 285/75R17's, which vary in size, but now, possible a 305/70. Here's what I have found;

BF Goodrich - Mud Terrain T/A K2M
LT285/75R17 - E Range LT305/70R17 - E Range
33.9" X 11.3" at 62 lbs 33.9" X 12.2" at 64 lbs

Goodyear MTR Kevlar
LT305/70R17 - D Range
34.1" X 12.2" at 64 lbs

Toyo Open Country MT
LT285/75R17 - E Range
34.1" X 11.6" at 71 lbs

Maxxis Bighorn MT-762
LT305/75R17 - D Range
34" X 12.2"

Nitto Terra Grappler Mud Terrain
LT285/75R17 - E Range
34.09" X 11.57"

As you can see, there's not much difference between the sizes other than width. My three top choices Goodyear, BFG and the Toyo. Fully aware of the fender and body mount issues, also the weight, but as you can see, they Toyo is not that much heavier per tire, but multiplied by 5, is about 40 lbs. So the real question becomes width. Any input on the 11" vs 12" tire or the overall performance of the tire, such as BFG's getting harder tread after about a year?

I like the skinner ones but really don't know that the .5" will matter too much with everything you have planned. With those sizes I'd be tempted to the Toyo myself. If I wasn't working on a SAS plan, It would be between that and the MTR.

For an easy decision maker between those size choices............................go for the 35-12.5-17!:biggrin2:

Sorry, had to do it!

Installed my long travel 2.5 ICON's then reconnected KDSS while on lift in full droop, not sure how it's limiting.

I'm planning to run it for now, but.............. it's future is in question. Trial by fire or rocks, probably rocks.

I love Santa's little helpers in brown. 4 - Toyo MT's in the 285/75R17 flavor and Icon 2.5 front coil overs with remote reservoir. Waiting for wheels to come in and the 5th tire to arrive.

Here's a little parts porn. Get to go pick up wheels tomorrow from SCS, they just got them in yesterday. A set of the Stealth 6's. Then still trying to make arrangements to drop off the 4Runner for use as a mock-up and also 4.56 gears, then the build will begin.

Hopefully, since it should have about 1,000 miles, I won't need too much of this;

(yes, old school) or too many band-aids, either. Best call the doc and stock up on the pain meds, though. I'll be rating this build by the pills in lieu of bananas.

I'm hoping so. Should be heading to Moab for Cruise Moab to meet up with some friends from CO. It will be the true test.

Started install of the Metal Tech LT rear suspension today only to discover that the Johnny Joints have two different bolt hole sizes, which means the larger one will not work. Of course only after everything is torn apart do I find this. Well, charge ahead and get close to 2/3 complete. Should hopefully button the rear up tomorrow, minus the one link, then time to tackle the front.

Been a long weekend. Got the back mostly done, just waiting for the replacement Johnny Joint from Metal Tech so I can swap the lower control arm. Now, just need to add some weight as it's sitting pretty high.

The front has been a real ass kicker. Going at this alone makes it all that more challenging. Almost done with drivers side, then time to switch to the other side.

Surprisingly, no cuts or skinned knuckles. Only on screwdriver under the thumb nail, thank goodness for gloves. There was still blood, but it could have been much worse.

so did you end up losing the kdss ???

And those long travel fronts dont come with teh cdc valving right ???

I thought those would be better to have cdc valving because you changed from super soft at the trail versus alittle stiffer for hwy/city driving...

either I'm sitting here envious of your build...

No, I have not ditched the KDSS yet. I am hooking it all back up and will see how it impacts or limits travel. As for the CDC in the long travel, I am not too sure. I didn't even opt for it. I remember all the hoopla over the Rancho 9000 series way back, and I had a set on an old truck. I never got out and adjusted the stupid things at the trail head, I just left them set on 5 and wheeled it, and drove it back home.

I am hoping to get done and to alignment by Wednesday. Then gears, sliders, bumpers and Moab in May.

Definitely subscribing to this thread :snacker:

Having experienced adjustable coilovers (but in road racing / time attacks) I would prefer the adjustability. But thats just me.

If you keep your kdss ... pls update this on any issues that may come up with a extended travel suspension. Thanks as this is something I am debating on...

Good bye to the excess body mount, good ole sawzall and Torch blade made quick work of it. Good thing for gloves again, one smashed finger and chunk of the cuticle torn off with the glove on. Cleaned up with a flapper wheel and paint. Will weld some reinforcement later.

Done! Well, mostly. Still need alignment at this point and some trimming and possible finesse with a BFH. image.jpg
