Rocky road outfitters roof rack

Pawzitiv, what type of roof cargo bag are you using? I've been looking at the Thule Cargo Bags. Wanted to see if you had a recommendation. Thanks!

Narkhelek, I'm using a Sportrack Sherpa 13 cargo bag. It was cheap (< $40) and the right dimensions/capacity for my big Springbar tent, 2 outfitter sleeping bags and air mattress. All gear inside the cargo bag is wrapped in big orange garbage bags since this cargo bag isn't totally waterproof. I've also inserted a 32" square piece of 1/2" ply as a floor in the cargo bag; it helps give the bottom some rigidity. Because of the RRO roof rack cross bar tubing spacing (relative to the size of the cargo bag), I use some climbing slings as extensions for the front and back hold-down straps on the cargo bag.

The next time I have the cargo bag up on my RRO rack, I'll try to remember to take some pics and I'll add them to this thread.

Just got mine installed. VERY COOL.
This unit is perfect for me, able to hold gear when we need it and looks great, much better then stock cross rails. This is solid!

I want to thank SeattleMike for the deal on the TE rails, without which this project could not have proceeded. Get well and stay positive!!!!!!!

If anyone has been thinking about going this route, it's well worth it. I ordered the shovel/axe holder and 3 light bar as well for a later date. You can't beat the price and proud to say the American quality. Rocky Road is :thumb3:

Here are some pix of the SportRack Sherpa 13 cargo bag that I'm using with my Rocky Road Outfitter roof rack. Climbing up on the rock sliders and rear wheels makes for relatively easy loading/unloading ... belt buckles not recommended for this technique.

How have you guys liked this long term? I am debating between this with a Load Warrior basket on and off as needed and the Gobi Stealth. I have around 10" to the top of my garage door with my lift and 285s so the rack being removable is nice, but damn is the Gobi a good looking rack.

I'm going with need vs use. I needed to carry the extra weight, but not all of the time. I like the versatility of putting the load warrior up there when I need it, and taking it down and storing it the rest of the time. I still can use the sun roof. I also tried to think of what I would carry up there I would have to put up there myself 85percent of the time. If it's too big or heavy I think trailer. Just my two cents. I'll try and get some pictures this Sunday if I'm not called into work.

Is it possible to flip the mounting so the brackets point toward the roof instead of up (moving the bars below flush to the factory rail)? I don't like how the bracket and bars are higher than the factory TE rails. I was going to build my own, but decided to look at something a little more simple.

Certainly looks like it could be mounted that way, the concern would be whether the rack would clear the roof where it curves up that little bit in the middle. Maybe one of these guys could give it a try for ya. :thumb3:

Based on this pic it looks like the shark fin might be in the way. Don't know if the rails could be moved further forward than they are in the pic.

Yup agreed, or possibly the rack further forward on the rails.

I'm very happy with my RRO Adventure Rack. Mine doesn't have any vibration/sound issues at highway speeds and the powdercoat is holding up fine. Even though my 4Runner is sitting on OW 2.5 suspension and 285 tires, my rack still clears my standard 7-foot high garage door by a couple of inches. The rack securely holds anything I've ever strapped on to it .. I've had over 200 lbs up on it. I suspect the roof sheet metal or factory rack rails will show signs of overloading long before the RRO rack.

Unless you intend to mount a RTT, I think think the RRO Adventure Rack is probably the best bang for the buck you're likely to find.

The triangular plates supporting the crossbars sit 1-5/8" higher than the factory roof rails.

I don't think this will work. If the rack is inverted, the grub screws locking the crossbars into their sockets on the triangular mount plates will likely dig into the roof sheet metal and if indeed the bars do clear the roof they'd still be so close that you'd have a bear of time threading your tie-down straps around the bars.

You could still go for the RRO rack and fab up your own mount plates that position the rack a bit lower.
