roof rack on fiberglass lip

I am thinking of installing a storage basket on top of my 87'. I do not want to drill so I think that using an attachment that uses the lip on the top would be the best way to go for me. I have heard that the lip breaks off sometimes. What kind of load can these things carry before worrying about damage? I want to use a Thule or Yakima setup. I am open to suggestions.

If you're talking about that slight lip over the side sliders, the answer is no, it's not there to support weight.

got it, I saw another 1st gen with a rack attached to them
I also heard of a guy on this forum who had broken them off

I could use a rack up there, and do not want to drill my top, any ideas?

I would like to put one of those Thule or Yakima baskets up there. I don't know how much they weight (40 lbs ish). and maybe 100 lbs of gear. I came up with an idea of standard clamps on the cab (metal lip), with magnets on the rear. in other words there would be two flat donut shaped magnets connected to the roll bar and resting against the bottom side of the top. With two oppositely polarized magnets attached to the basket on the top side of the top. has anyone tried this?

I have a Yakima set up on my 88 and it seems to work great. It's just their their gutter mounted towers. I have a Yakima Rocket Box on it but common sense prevails in this situation and I only use it for stuff like skis, and sleeping bags and other "light stuff". I also have little rails bolted to the back where I have another tower set and bar mounted. From the middle bar to the back I have a bike tray. I check the gutters on a regular basis and if I had a hint of rust anywhere up there I would not go this route. Best bet is to just get a can back. Oddly enough that soft top is rated to higher strength rating than the fiberglass stock top. Good luck and hopefully this helps.

I think I am going to build a rack that bolts into the bed rail
I do not want to spend the money on the soft top
and I am a pretty good welder, so I think I am going to build something I can use with the top on or off.
