That looks good K. But can you get a picture without the camper in the background? I had a heckuva time figuring out why the bottom of the canoe was shaped so weird. Lol

One of these guys with the stock rack can work nicely. For another $150ish you can add a front receiver hitch from CURT and use it in the front so you can access the rear whenever you want. I had that setup on my last 4runner and it worked great. I have a curt front hitch in the box that I never put on because I ended up putting a hidden winch instead. Eventually I'll build a nicely hidden front receiver again for it so I can carry long stuff like canoes.

idk if i took another side view photo but next time i do i will be sure not to have any canoe altering things int he background. :thumb:

Baja Rack

Have one, love it. 4 years with absolutely no issues and I have an RTT on it half the year. [MENTION=105481]3wbdriver[/MENTION], not sure if you got one out of a bad powdercoat batch, but I just had mine redone in the spring after 3.5 years in Canadian weather including road salt and all that fun stuff.

I would suggest you stay away from Baja rack. I've had mine for 2 years and it's rusting EVERYWHERE!

If I could do it again I would choose a frontrunner rack in a heartbeat. They're lighter, made of aluminum, and have 100's of accessories to choose from. Granted they're not the best looking but if you're looking for form over function, then look no further.

This, having followed various rack news/threads/complaints I think I would buy aluminum rack next time. The aluminum stuff I've mounted up top over the years holds up much better and while my rack seems to have held up better than some others the increased wait time and price since I bought mean I wouldn't do it again.

Canoe rack

well you have some pretty steep requirements but i have consistenly utilized the stock roofrack with OEM crossbars with a rather large and heavy canoe.

This is about how it fit on my old Jeep GC and the Dodge Durango I mentioned above. I think you also need a way to tie it back so it can't possibly slide forward. See my signature photo below. That's without the ropes, just before we took it off. I used two stacked 2x4, screwed together front and back because I didn't trust the crossbars to carry the weight. The 2x4s were tied with 1/8" line to the corners and/or crossbars.

I don't think you can lift the canoe onto the truck by yourself. I tried that once and dropped it on the front fender. As I got near the top it started to slide sideways and I couldn't catch it. You have much more control with two people.

I guess you've got a Grumman canoe, or something similar, so... about 80 pounds?

A yakima or thule rack with gunwale brackets can easily and safely carry a 17-footer. No problem.

Your specific problem is getting the boat on the roof single-handed. Rear load is going to be a big issue because, without a second set of hands, the boat is going to hit the spoiler before the cross-bar and the spoiler is not a good pivot-point for an 80 pound boat. I had a hard enough time single handing my boat on top of my old Subaru. I would never even attempt to do that with a 4Runner, as tall as it is.

Maybe a combination of hitch-rack and cross bar would work. Check out the Thule Goalpost. The only other option I can think of is a trailer.

I got my full sized rack from Camelback metals... A forum member that makes them. Removable sun roof which works great. I hauled roughly 350 pounds on it before with absolutely no issues and a paddle board with absolutely no issues. So far loving the rack :thumb3:

Funny. I'm about to put the Front Runner rack on my TEP once I get the thing clay barred and waxed. After reading about Baja racks disintegrating after a few years of use and Gobi's rusting from the inside out, the Front Runner is a no-brainer here in the Midwest. Same goes for the EZiAwn K9 and Labrak.

Are the tubular racks cooler looking? Maybe. But I plan on actually using mine and a flat rack is definitely more versatile.
