Roof weatherstripping

I was at the car wash and the blower blew this part off of one side. Is anything supposed to actually connect it? I just slid it back into the channel. What's it called (in case it flies out on the highway and I need to find another one). And lastly, do I really need it? Thanks.

At $60 ish each, I put mine in with a few dabs of RTV to 'glue' it in place. Weatherstrip adhesive would work well too.

The channel weather strip on mine came out on one side after a wash as well. I pulled the other side out when I got home. Haven't put them back in. With the roof rack in place, this will not cause any leaks to worry about.

All of these seem to be parts for 2006-2009 according to online shops. Did they fit your 2003 ok?

You don't need new ones! I had the same issue. There is no glue or double sided tape needed. When I had my 4runner painted, I took it completely apart. With the roof rack off I did a test fit and they were tight. You don't have to take the roof rack off, only one side at a time. Slide the moldings in from the rear. The rear moldings behind the roof rack slide out. Get some dielectric grease or any non petroleum grease. Just clean out all the grooves in the channels (while your in there), and slide the moldings in under the bump outs in the channels in the roof.

Mine have been tight since I put it back together ( about 5 months ), and multiple car washes. They were installed from the factory with no tape or glue.

Both of mine have been gone for a long time now... seems like this is quite a common thing to lose. Has anyone heard of leaking due to these being gone? Seems to be pretty well-sealed without them...

If I were to put new ones on, I'd probably use some silicone to ensure they don't fly away again.

2003-2009 are the exact same body style. Only major differences are headlights, grill and slight differences in front fenders body wise, for the most part. So yes, they fit perfectly.

The head lights aren't the only differences, the wheel wells/fenders are different as well, the 2003 to 2005 are more flat at the top of the wheel wells, the 2006 2009 are rounded at the top of the wheel wells, the cladding is also different, not that any of these differences affect the hood, the hoods as mention are the same shape other than a scoop on the Sport model.

Gotcha. The point was tho, that the roof is the same through all the years and that the part numbers I listed will work regardless of year. :wink2:

I recently noticed leaking just above my left shoulder on the drivers side. I’ve been inspecting the door seals and none seem damaged (plus the drips are not from the door but a couple of inches further inside, up high).

I only recently realized I’m missing this piece. Gonna order a new replacement and hope this fixes it.

These are just trim pieces, they will not stop a leak, your leak is another issue!!

Thanks, you caught me before I could delete. Further research and perhaps it’s just a coincidence that this weather strip is also missing. I’m wondering if it’s a seal gone bad under the front driver side roof rack Mount (stock room rack, never modded, and just started, possibly die to age)
