Rotor size

So I'm a little confused. I have a 2000 sport. It has the same, larger, brakes the the Limited has, 16" wheel setup.

Rotor sizes:
The standard 4runner, 295mm diameter w/20mm thickness
Limited 4runner, 317mm diameter w/20mm thickness
Tundra, 318.7mm diameter w/26mm thickness

I could only find one size rotor for the Tundra. I don't know if this is the "199" or the "231".

One big question is, what does the 199 and 231 refer to?

This may explain why I have very little brake issues since my rotors are almost as big as the Tundra rotors. I'm sure the thickness helps too.

199 and 231 are the differences between the 2 calipers that were on the tundras.

im not exactly sure on which years had the 199mm but they were recalled to the 231mm.
but the tundra is made to carry a much larger final wieght then the 4runner in whole so thats why a lot of us can still use the 199mm and still have a significant upgrade over stock..

but yes the 199 is the size of the caliper vs the bigger caliper 231mm.

I didn't think about the size of the rotor.
I can see why the guys with the smaller 4runner rotors benefit from the Tundra upgrade. My guess is that there is less of a difference form the bigger 4runner brakes.

true, i dont know by first hand because i didnt have the bigger 4runner brakes but i assume with a thicker rotor and most likely a bigger caliper it is still an upgrade just not of a big noticeable jump for those with the smaller ones.

but if you arent having warped rotors and if you dont eat through pads really quick then my opinion would be that it would not be worth it for you to upgrade to the tundra's

unless you start getting into towing and all that for whatever reason it may be helpful

the 231 calipers are much larger and the big 4runner calipers. They make a big difference. The pistons are larger too i believe. I couldnt imagine my 4runner with the small brakes. It barley stops with the Bigger 4runner brakes

Having gone from the larger 4runner brakes to tundra 231's. Its night and day, tundras are much stronger.

I mainly upgraded for the thicker rotors, warping is a big issue as my truck is up and down the mountains every day in the winter for ski season.

The tundra rotors are the same diameter but about twice as wide as the OE rotors on your sport and my limited. this combined with the larger 231 calipers results in alot better brakes all around.

I only had one choice of Tundra rotors when I did my upgrade. The 199 and 231mm calipers both use the same rotor.

Just for your reference regarding the use of the numbers 199 and 231.... They are physical dimensions as shown in this little pic.

It's all making sence now. The rotors are virtually the same diameter but the tundra disks are 6mm thicker. Thicker would make them more stable. That and the increased size of the calipers would make a big difference.

Mine were ready to be replaced anyway, so I decided to upgrade... what an improvement!!

The diameter is the same, but 1/4" thicker in comparison.

The tundra rotors are almost the same diameter as the later year limited/sport 4runner. They are thicker.

The early year and later year non-limited/sport have smaller rotors.
