thought I would re-write my previous thread under a better header...

I have a rotten egg smell when I "get on it" or when going up a hill. The mechanic said its "normal" for a T4R with 190K on her.

So I would like to re-do my exhaust and cats. I have the V6 in California(sucks I know, even more limited on the options!) But I am curious about this...

New cats, FlowMaster has them, if I get Doug T long tube headers paired with the FlowMaster cats and a FlowMaster or MagnaFlow cat back exhaust running 2.5" through out. Do I really need 3 cats? Can I pass smog with 1 or put dual exhaust and run 2 cats?

Will this set up eliminate that "smell" or any better options? I'm not adverse to experimenting(with the truck guys, and no not like that either, I love the T4r..but there are limits!)

I did try the CataClean, kind of gave me a little power, eliminated the smell a little bit, but seems like replacement is the best option.

Not sure about the 4.7's, but the 4.0's ALL have the rotten egg (read sulfur) smell when they "get on it". Many have tried different mods to remove it from the equation but few... and I mean FEW, have succeeded. What many peeps, here on T4R.org do to prevent the smell from entering the cabin (when the rear window is down), is to take it to a muffler shop and simply have the tail pipe "turned" to the side. Good luck!
 
well, biscuits! what a great and cheap idea! Thank you. I do want to upgrade the exhaust, so may do that
 
on my v6 i replaced the exhaust from the cat back with a after market. i think once the resonator is removed the smell lessens, mine when i "get on it" or am going up a hill the smell is much less then it used to be but can still be smelled some times
 
The only way to get rid of the odor is to find low sulfur gasoline which doesn't exist. The odor has nothing to do with your mileage or the exhaust. I had the issue from day one with the remaining Japanese gas that was in it from the factory with all of 12 miles on it. Toyota did have a TSB where the cats were replaced, but it made very little difference. The response from Toyota was that you are not supposed to drive with the rear window down.
 
I have the tailpipe turned to the side and resonator removed and get the sulfur smell, not much to do other than roll up the rear window when accelerating hard.
 
i have an '03 w 4.7 and have the same issue- its surprising to me that both engines have this issue- seems like that wouldve been figured out by toyota...kinda sucks to keep the rear window up in town
 
yeah, it is nice to cruise around with everything down. Ok, well, having known all this, I can re think my strategy for modding my T4R!
 
I have it as well. Toyota tells you to use different gas :shrug: Our Lexus IS250 has the smell as well, I guess its a common Toyota thing. Interesting every other manufacture figured out a way to eliminate the smell but Toyota cant
 
Are you guys just really sensitive to the little extra NOx you get at WOT due to the higher in-cylinder temps?


I've honestly never noticed a sulfur smell on my V6 4Runner, and I have around 100k miles on her.

Then again, I think it smells wonderful when a car comes off track and you can smell the difference in combustion. :)
 
one crazy thing I heard from the Magnaflow engineer, was to change out the battery, he had the problem on his durango and apparently the alternator was over charging his battery, causing the smell. I thought that sounded uber weird. But if it worked for him...
 
My 2003 4.7 does this too. Gotta change up the exhaust routing, its just fumes entering the cab. Even the smell wasnt there, there would still be exhaust fumes being sucked into that area, its like a vacuum.
