Rubbing with cornfed 3/2

I have a cornfed 3/2 with 285.70.17 nitto terra grapplers. I have wheel spacers but they are not installed. My questions are:

(1) Without the spacers, is a body mount chop necessary to prevent ALL rubbing in the front or will trimming the front plastic part suffice?

(2) If I put the wheel spacers on, would it make the tire go closer to the body mount or farther away?

(3) Do I need the wheels spacers on in the back to prevent rubbing there?

Thanks guys. I have searched a lot but am still confused about the above. And I know... it detailed for a first post.

I'd put spacer on the front and back. A body mount chop is not as big of a job as it sounds for the right shop. You maybe able to pull fender liners forward and cut, but your tire clearance will be almost none. It's hard with a spacer lift. One size smaller tire maybe a better fit if your going to do any off-roading.

I have a ome 2.5 with top out spacer, 275/70/18 bfg's, 1.25 spacers, and its super tight. I'll have to do a small body lift or go down a size. I haven't chopped my body mounts, but I had to cut a ton of lining. I scrub pulling in and out of driveways..

You'll have to get it installed and see what you got and if you can live with the rubbing.

Hey, I have the same questions as the OP, I got a lift that is similar to his 3/2- however it is a suspension lift... I want to do some offroading, and I was told that 285s would be find as long I did some serious med/heavy trimming... but some people say I need to chop and some don't... I guess the only way I'll find out will be to put them on and see? (Bought 1.5" spacers as well so that the tires don't rub on the UCAs)

Also, is there any way to do some preemptive trimming, or should I wait untill the tires are on and trim where they are rubbing?

The body mount chop is a tough call. It becomes an issue when you get up to a 285. Depending on the tire and your particular setup, it may or may not be required. Most of the more aggressive tires will require this. Regardless of lift (as long as your in the neighborhood of 3", much less and you'll need major trimming), the body mount will still potentially be an issue. It is my understanding that pretty much all 285's will require spacers (or offset wheels) to clear the UCA. So, the question of do spacers help/hurt the clearance for the body mount isn't really something to consider. They'll be needed if you run 285's (again, from my understanding, I DO NOT have experience running this size).

To clear this up, 3" of lift is 3" of lift, doesn't matter how you get it. The 3/2 Cornfed will allow you to clear the tires just as easily as a OME lift (from which I have 3" lift). If you go over 3" by using a spacer with OME coils, then it's not a fair comparison.

For preparation for larger tires with wheel spacers, I'd follow J.A.'s writeup. This will definitely be required. The only other things you need to mess with are the mud flaps, body mount, and a pinch weld on the front. Mud flaps will definitely need to come off on the front. Body mount and pinch weld will need to be handled on a case by case basis. I like to say plan on doing it or limiting your turning, that way you're prepared if you need it. If not, consider yourself lucky.

Even with a body lift, you'll still need to trim, just possibly not as much. I'd run the wheel spacers front/rear, just keeps the same track as factory (front vs rear, both will be wider now).

If I were you, and like the style, I would just pick up some FJ rims. If you can find a good deal, they can be had for only a little more than the wheel spacers. IMO, +15 offset seems to be the perfect balance b/w clearing the suspension components while not introducing extra rub on the fenders/body mount.

I ran 285/60/18s on FJ 18" wheels (+15 offset) for a while and they cleared the suspension fine. Due to their smaller height and my lift (3.5-4"), I never experienced an rubbing...even under flexing.

Also, I test ran my buddies 285/70/17 Cooper STT (true 33") on factory FJ wheels (+15 offset) and had no major rubbing on the road. I would imagine, there may be some trimming required if they were to be taken offroad, but nothing as bad as they would have after adding 1.25" spacers.

Again, the extra trimming may not be an issue/concern, but it is worth mentioning that it can be done without major trimming given the right offset.

NOTE:I've only found this to be true for wheels within the factory width realm (7.5 to 8")...at least the only two sets I've tested. Any wider and a smaller offset would be need to counter the extra width.
