Running 285's with factory spare on V6 4x4...can it be done????

After reading some posts where people were concerned about running bigger tires (such as 285/70/17 or 75/16...a 33" basically) where they wouldn't be able to carry a full spare. I can see how this would be a problem with the AWD V8's but was wondering if you could get away with running a factory size spare just up front on a V6 4x4 in 2wd? I would really love to goto a 33" tire with 3/2 lift someday but I don't like the idea not really having a spare if I get a flat.

I've been going with 285x75x16s for over a year now. I've never even thought about that issue. I would assume that it would be ok on a temporary basis to run the factory spare on the front in the event of a flat until the other tire could get fixed. If not, I guess I'm gonna start looking at a rear-mount spare tire carrier with a spare 285....I'm not taking the lift off, that's for sure.

That, or start carrying some fix-a-flat around with me.

Should be ok in 2WD mode. It was also mentioned, one could deflate the bigger tires to get a smaller diameter. I'm not sure how effective that would be though.

I think the owner's manual said that's a no-no. I wouldn't trust that stuff in my rims even without TPMS, as I heard it damages the rims.
 
33" spare

I recently lifted my 07 V6 4x4 and put on
285/70 R17 tires, including the spare. The spare just barely fits, but it works.

Wow, did you use any sort of tricks to get it to fit? I seem to remember reading someone was unable to even fit a 275 under there. Maybe there is a difference in the load-carrying vs. load-distributing hitches, but I thought the load-distributing would be the one with more room.. :confused:
 
fitting a 33" tire underneath

I should say that it took a bit of finesse to get it
to seat properly without hitting the bar (whose name I forgot) that is next to the rear axle. It goes up all the way with a little tilt to one side.
Since tires of the same metric dimensions are not exactly equal, I have BF Goodrich T/A KOs with a diameter of 32.7"

Very cool, is there any way possible for you to post any pics?? I am specifically interested in checking the amount of clearance the BFGs have in the front a rear wheel wells as well as the spare? How much trimming did you need to do in the wheel wells? Rubbing? I will be buy BFGs soon and am going back and forth between the 265 and 285 sizes.

-edit- I just found your thread regarding spacers. Are you running the stock wheels? I read that the 285 BFGs are recommended for 8"+ rims and assume the 7.5" stocker wouldn't work properly.

I'll try to get some pictures of the spare.

I wanted to keep my stock wheels because of those pressure sensing valves; and the 285 mm tires are still within spec for 7.5" rims.

The clearance in the front wheel wells is tight, but they do clear both the front and rear (including the mud flaps) when the suspension is not compressed. I haven't tested it under compression. However, the inside wheel in a turn hits the frame, and I've got to correct this problem. I still haven't decided how to do it--through changing the steering stops, adding spacers or a combination of both.

wow so you actually fit a 285 in the spair tire location!!!! I wonder if you are the first person to do this?

Actually, a friend helped me test it with his 33" tire before I took the plunge.
