Glad I got the MDX instead of the 4Runner

No offense guys, but I'm VERY glad that I picked the MDX over the 4Runner. Especially with the major safety problems found by Consumer Reports with the Lexus GX460 (equivelent to the 4Runner), I know I made the right choice.

It handles like a sports car and is very comfortable. While it probably won't do as well in the snow, I'm told by several owners that it does very well.

Also to the contrary, I'm really glad that I dumped my 3rd MDX (2008 model) in favor of the 4Runner - every time I get into the 4Runner I'm thrilled. The MDX was better as a sports car on the highway, but not so good as a 4WD. And I got stuck in the snow quite a bit with the MDX and always had clearance issues, plus the gas mileage was not all that good. And the CHEAP leather in the MDX - oh my gosh! The 4Runner leather feels like car leather should, and seems like it is about 3-4 times as thick as the thin stuff in the MDX. I guess the MDX is designed as a city car while the 4Runner is built for the country - not really in the same league as each other...

I'm in the same boat, moved from a 2008 MDX w/Sport Package to 2010 4Runner TE. While it drove great on the road (even moving into it from a BMW coupe), but it didn't impress in the snow or off road capability. The new 'runner is less than a week old, but so far not looking back for a second! Mistake corrected.

And after that brief intermission . . . I have a question about running boards/nerf bars/ step ups.

I've pretty much decided on some sort of tubular step ups, be they "nerf bars" or "step up bars" mainly for the ease of cleaning and lack of plastic (I'm in Florida and black plastic fades so quickly here).

I can't decide what would look best on my Blizzard Pearl SR5. I've seen pictures on the forum of a Trail with black tubulars and saw on this thread the silver Limited and SR5 with the stainless steel. But I've only seen other BP's with the OEM running boards, not with tubulars.

My personal experiences with such things are black tubulars on a black Explorer and stainless steel tubulars) on a black F-250 Crew Cab. Night and day differences and meant to achieve different looks on each vehicle (the Explorer has colored key bumpers and door handles so chrome would look out of place while the F-250 has a stainless steel toolbox and bumpers).

My initial thought for my SR5 was the stainless steel for longevity and to match the "chrome" already on the vehicle. But I'm weary of chrome overload and I couldn't help but think the black might be very clean and inconspicuous looking. Especially since my wheels are alloy and kind of that darker gray metal I've come to love.

Either way, I'm thinking about these Steelcrafts: 2010 Toyota 4-Runner Steelcraft Round Nerf Bars, Steelcraft Round Step Bar I'd planned, like some of you, to wait for the Westin offerings but I'm a 5'2" girl and am kinda tired of jumping out of my truck so sooner is better. Anyone have bad experiences with the Steelcrafts?

I'm interested in Stellcraft too, in BLACK. Would love to see some pics on 5th gen!

I just purchased a 2010 4Runner in Maryland and the parts department told me the running boards were only available as replacements and that they would cost $800 each... plus $200 for installation. Where are you that your dealer had the running boards?

My local dealer told me a memo went out from Toyota saying there will be official Toyota accessory running boards "cut to fit" available in mid-July.

2010 Trail Edition Running Board Part List

Hey guys, just checking back in on the running boards for the 2010 Trail. Has anyone had luck getting these in the US? Ordering them from Canada? Anything?

All the dealers I've contacted are giving me less than clear answers, but if it's a standard feature of Canadian TE's, it seems like we should be able to order them and have them shipped.

All, I'm new to the forum so hopefully this post will show up properly (with jpg attachment for P/N's...). Forgive me if there ends up being a huge pic in the middle of this post...

Just traded my 2002 T4R Sport for a 2010 Trail Edition (Silver Metallic) last month and this running board situation has been pissing me off like most of you. I carry a lot of gear on my Yak roof rack plus my wife is 5'2" so adding rb's are a must for me. I live in Salt Lake City, UT and the situation is the same - no models with rb's pre-installed and no info on options from the factory. Here's what I've found out after several phone calls to dealers in the US and the Great White North. Finally one parts guy in Vancouver actually did some digging for me and found part numbers. All this specifically applies to the TE version but assuming SR5 and Limited would be a similar story.

The Canadian T4Rs apparently have the running boards added as a "port installed" accessory -- they're put on in LA when the trucks come off the boat before they're shipped to Canada. The Vancouver parts guy couldn't find a P/N for a full running board kit and said the only current way to get the parts would be order each individually as if I wrecked my truck (and it would be expensive). The funny thing is that all of the parts would ship out of LA if I were to order through him... He sent me a quote for the parts but said that any US dealer should be able to order the same parts from LA.

So, took the quote to my local dealer and they were able to dig up a schematic of the Trail Edition Running Board parts and part numbers. I'll try to attach a pic of the schematic at the end. According to him, the part numbers for TE running boards that were previously listed in this thread (Right Side: Part # 5177135200, Left Side: Part # 5177235170) are only for the top "deck" of the running board for each side (as a side note, the top deck molding look like it matches the top of the rear bumper molding with the "Toyota Truck Mustache and Soul patch" design). You'd also need the extruded aluminum step structure ("frame" under the top deck) and 4 bracket kits with bolts.

Long story short, I was quoted a list of parts that would cost $736.90 PER SIDE, for a total of $1473.80 (just the parts, no tax or install labor). $800 for a full set of running boards is ridiculous enough, but over $1500 for a full set is F**KING crazy (somebody at Toyota deserves to be tied to the roof of the Baja 1000 T4R for the whole race on this one if you ask me). For reference, list price on a running board kit for a Highlander or Tacoma through the dealer are $400 - $500.

Not going to be ordering parts until they come out with a kit that is sub $500... All you TE owners out there, Please post any updates you're able to find out, and if my data is incorrect on the P/Ns, let me know. Haven't tried to call a LA area dealer to see if the story is any different out there.

I agree! The pic you posted looks a LOT like what Dyer Toyota is advertising. I had the same issue with no running boards when I bought my old Tundra - and bought a set from Dyer. Took 6 days from ordering them to get them in San Diego! You might want to check into that.

For my SR5 I decided to go with the Steelcraft stainless nerf bars but they won't be ready until the end of the month. I decided to wait for them.

Couldn't find anything for the Trail on www.****dyertoyota.com, but I did see a special going for the running boards that fit the SR5 and Limited (the ones that have been pictured several times in this thread, $276.99 if anyone is looking for them). Did you see the Trail ones on their website?

Trail Runing Board Part Kit Update

Just got a voicemail from Vanessa at Toyota Customer Service (I'd called 2 weeks ago to complain about the lack of RB kit and other accessories). Apparently Toyota is going to offer a full kit for the Trail RB's, expected availability is July sometime. No info on expected cost. Will see what July brings to the 2010 4R accessories webpage...

They weren't available on Friday! Just called my dealer's parts department and they are available for SR5 and Limited only. Trail to come later - no date listed.
