rust and under coating

My truck, '99 Limited, came from Indianapolis. It has rust but not as much as I thought it would. So I have been cleaning that up underneath.
My plan is to remove any loose rust, use a needle scaler and some rolocs to prep, then spray it with Ospho. After that I will spray some under coat, or maybe paint, under the truck.

My questions-

1) Is the Ospho plan OK, or is there something else I should consider?

2) Any body got recommendations on an under coat product that is DIY? I want it to protect the truck as well as offer some sound dampening.

I used chassis coat on mine. Magnet paints makes it and so far I am happy. It hasn't been on more than 6 months though so no long term opinion.
 
I just recently did this to mine and used the POR product line and I find it very strong. I first wire brushed off all the surface rust, and then used POR degreaser and sprayed the hell out of it. I let that sit and then washed it down, next I spray on POR metal prep and let that sit for about 20 mins and then rinsed it off. Finally I put on two coats of POR-15 which is a rust sealer, it does not convert the rust, but it is a non pores paint that seals it in its tracks. This sh*t is hard as a rock after too!
 
I am doing the same to mine this weekend. Already got the material. Only need to coat the rear diff cover an a couple of other minor places underneath.
 
When doing this keep in mind this stuff is like cement, if you go over a bolt or but it's gonna be a bit** to get off. I did it anyway because I'd rather worry about breaking the paint seal over snapping bolt heads due to rust
 
Hi, I'm up in Canada (the "corrosion capital" of the America's) we have a product up here that's awesome. It coats everything like a thick dripless oil slick & creeps into all the nooks & crannies. I have a 1999 limited with no rust. This stuff is applied to the entire undercarriage, engine compartment & inside all the doors & weather stripping. I do the undercarriage every year & the other every 2 years. Zero rust, with a thirty mile work commute for 15 winters and tons of road salt. I love working on everything as well, as I've never had a seized bolt or anything. Also all the window mechanisms & door locks are kept lubed as a bonus. It's a small price to pay at $140.00 for the whole treatment (every two years), and half of that per year for the undercarriage. Well worth it for us in Canada, as just a few winters usually destroy vehicles. The product & process is called Corrosion Free, very similar to Fluid Film in the US, but does not swell & destroy rubber seals like that does. It actually stops rubber from drying out. I love it, as it keeps the value of the car. In my experience up here, the hard processes get chipped by gravel & salty moisture gets in & rusts under the hard coating before you can catch it.

I wire wheeled all my rust / surface rust that I had, put some prime and then used VHT chassy and frame paint. I also used EASTWOOD internal frame coating. I went crazy and thick used 6 cans 20$x6... I sprayed simple green inside my frame like.crazy then power washed it through the holes. Then blew everything out with air compressor. If you look under the truck there are some cavities that are part of the body. I also used EASTWOOD internal frame coating in those areas to. And on top of rear shock mounts. My frame looks tits. It barley had any rust to begin with. Only after the winter and only on the back end. I'm am also planning on buying FLUID FILM before winter. Which is a nice protector that makes water and salt sit on top. Gonna do this before for winter.


 
According to the guys on the CJ Fourm the phosphoric acid stuff you spray on and let it sit and then hit with a high pressure sprayer. And the rust goes bye bye.

How many quarts or pints did you use to do the entire underside twice?

Keep in mind that you have to completly strip the frame for POR-15 to do anything otherwise you are just trapping water next to your frame and it will peel off.

You wheel much at MIOBI?

I believe I used 2 quarts and I was very very generous. The last poster was correct as well. From what I was told and what I have read, the paint needs to be applied to either rust, or bare metal in order to do its job, other wise it supposedly peels. I guess time will tell but mine has been on for 5 months almost with no sign of peeling and I painted over every single area. Even the painted areas without stripping them. I did sand them down nicely though first prior to the degreaser and metal prep. As with any paint job a lil texture helps the paint grip.

Not Yet... Feel Like I never have any time to have fun wheeling... Yet. I plan on wire brushing the whole underside including axle, frame, suspension pieces such as Control arms, Sway bars etc... and the metal shroud covering the gas tank. I have a done quite a bit of research and have used this stuff in the past on smaller cars. I was curious because I'e always been told when using this stuff, less is more.
