Letter to Toyota.com
I have taken my 2013 4 runner to Superior Toyota in Erie Pa more than 6 times for rust on the rear lift gate. The color is blizzard pearl. The rust starts as orange specks then progresses to bubble. They have photographed it several times. I was told that the rust is due to external damage. There is more than one area that is rusting and a bubble in the paint on one spot that has not yet started to rust. I have also taken it to 2 non-Toyota body shops who both say that it does not look externally damaged and feel the lift gate was not properly cleaned before being painted. It is rusting from under the paint. I called the 800 Toyota number and was told they stand behind the dealer. I would like someone for upper management to address this complaint. I would like another look at the lift gate. I do not paint cars for a living but find it impossible to be from outside damage when the paint is bubbling from underneath. If a customer spends 50k on a vehicle I feel the toyota should stand behind their name and fix the defect. It is very frustrating and sad that I have spend hours on the phone, at the dealership, at outside body shops, and on the Internet researching and addressing this issue. I have attached pictures, one is of the furthest progressed spot, tone is an area that is starting, the last is still a bubble that has not started to rust.
Today I took it to another Toyota garage . When they put my vin number in I was told they wouldn't even look at it. Corporate has documented on file that it is external damage. Beyond sick over this, not sure what direction to go.
