Rust converters

For what its worth, I used a product called corroseal to convert the rust on my frame.


Time consuming, but happy with the results. I looked at Por-15, but opted with a more cost-effective route at first. I'll monitor the rust over time and if needed, go with POR-15 down the road!

Although I have not tried with POR-15, my experience with Rustoleum is that once you put it on, you are stuck with it. It does not play well with other paint systems you try to put on top of it.
 
I bought a $40 sand blaster from harbor freight. $120 compressor $10 bag of crushed glass, $3 face shield $3 painters suit. $25 3m respirator and your good to go.
 
Topcoating

I'm trying to find comparisons/pros/cons for chassis saver over por15.

Need to fix up my frame, but i need to be able to clean it off and weld on the frame.

And, as far as topcoating either, could they he coated with rubberized undercoating, for chip/sandblasting resistance?

I used both. Chassis saver and por15. I used por15 around my rocker panels area and inside my truck. And behind where the spare mounts. It's good if it's prep properly!!!! I used chassis saver on my rear coil/shock tower mounts before welding it back. And I used it on my whole rear axle. The rear axle has chips just from the jack being under it :(. Could be because I sprayed it when it was cold outside.


*chassis saver and por15 are best cured when it's VERY HUMID OUTSIDE. They cure from humidity.

But I like both products. Chassis is holding great on the rear shock tower mounts. The axle is so so.... but it's holding up.

I did one on each side, 2" from the upper control arm bracket weld. I originally used a 1/2" drill bit but didn't think it was big enough so I bought step bits & opened it to 3/4 & hit it with some Black paint. Last weekend I finally got all of the rust chips out & will use the Eastwood internal frame coating along with Eastwood rust converter on the outside as soon as I get a lower humidity day.

Not sure how many of you have heard of OSPHO. It is the consistency of water and it can be easily sprayed on rust. The thin consistency of the product gets down behind any flakey rust you might have missed with a wire brush. It converts the rust to a black primer. I like it cause being able to put it in a small hand-held pump sprayer (like you might find in a garden center) it allows me to get in tough spots. I have let other folks try this stuff on trailers, metal work and even cast iron porch railings and they all LOVE IT. It works great but like any rust converter, it has to be painted/sealed over.

Google "OSPHO" or see if the local Sherwin Williams shop has it, or can get it for you.

I've been using Ospho for years, it is a true rust converter. I just recently coated the battery area and lower frame below that after some light wire brush work and it does great. Leaves a white powdery stuff that you just wipe off if you are not painting over it. It turns the rusty parts black.

Sounds like a good product to get into tight areas of the engine bay like the top of the frame rails, motor mounts etc.
