Rust preventative testing

Day 4 results

No new samples have failed, others are clearly getting worse.

Try linseed oil too. My dad used it to coat his masontry tools so they wouldn't rust between jobs. He passed away in 81. I used them around 2005 to replaster my living room. No rust at all.

Surprised at how well the cooking spray is doing. Not surprised at the failure of the ZEP products, I absolutely hate ZEP Garbage quality across the board IMO I have used the ZEP2000 many times over the last 7 years. Cans clog up all the time, you're lucky if you can actually use half the can.

It's interesting that the ATF sample looks worse then the control. I went back and read the OP and it looks like you took proper steps to make sure all samples got thoroughly cleaned. I'd be curious to see how deep the ATF rust is compared to the control rust. When the study concludes of course. In the photo's it appears to be way deeper then the control.

Maybe that's why the strawberry milkshake is so damaging

The only Zep product I like is their hand soap (cherry bomb).

The cooking spray is holding up very well. in fact, it has the least amount of rust of the products that have failed so far.
 
A pink milk shake is devasting for a transmission for several reason but mainly because coolant breaks down the adhesive that holds the clutch disc material together (ask me how I know..), not so much because of rust. The clutch material turns it into a sludge/clay like material that blocks the valve body passages, clogs the filter and causes the tranny pump to fail.

In regards to why the ATF treated sample looks worse than the control, it must have something to do with the detergants or something that is in it that doesn't react well with water/moisture. When the fluid is in a sealed enviroment "doing it's thing", it's fine. But if its exposed to moisture, it causes some serious rust on ferrous materials.
 
I'm enjoying watching this thread, thanks for doing it. The ONE thing that I'm definitely getting from this is: I'll never use cooking spray again for making food ! Whatever is in it that is keeping steel from rusting can't be any good for the human body !
 
Great Idea. I used Por 15 under mine several years ago. Even though I followed the directions, I must have messed up somewhere. A year or so later a lot of it was pealing off. After that, I bought a die grinder and started to go over the largest easiest areas. I used Rustoleum Rust Converter and it's held up pretty well.

I've got several of these products in my wishlist on Amazon so I'm really looking forward to see the results.

That's one of the reasons I went with Eastwood products. With POR15 there's too many steps & it has to be perfect. You have to use all of their products & it gets expensive real quick! We'll see if I made the right decision in a few years on my frame.

I concur. Maybe it all peeled because I didn't use their Top Coat after everything else. Though it states that it's for bare metal and \ UV protection, I figured I wouldn't get much UV under my rig (unless I rolled it, and then of course I sure wouldn't be thinking about the Por-15 peeling off my undercarriage). Maybe it forms another layer of sealant that's needed.
 
What I really want to see is what these look like is 1-2-3 years if you can hold the test that long. Maybe speed it up by spraying them with salt water, soaking them in salt water as well as fresh water, see what happens.
