rust spot on body

Hey guys I have a rust spot on the rear of my 4Runner and I was wondering if its a big deal if I don't get it fixed. I was planning to keep the 4runner for atleast 5 years.

Sorry should of been more clear, but basically I’m asking is if I don’t get it fixed will it spread all over the body? Would it look horrible in 5 years? It’s at a spot where if you close the tailgate you won’t even see it. Only spot on the whole truck that has rust. Everywhere else is clean.

Depending how much you care for appearance you could just wire wheel that spot to get rid of any flaking paint and then hit it with some rust converter and then paint it up.

If that at the top of the tailgate like I think it is, if you got a can of duplicolor I dont think anyone would notice.

As long as your tailgate isnt hitting that spot. I would fix it like previous poster suggested. :] stone chips can rust out fairly quickly in certain climates.

I was hoping I could of left it since you can’t even see it with the tailgate closed but was worried if it would spread. Having two jobs I really barely have anytime to do anything. Thanks for the reply guys.

That will spread, and it has already started to, as shown by the rust bubbles below. Take care of that soon.

Easy to fix. Take a small precision flat head screwdriver with sharp edges and scrape away for about 10 minutes until there is no more rust. Then hit it with primer and some touch up paint.

Rust will always spread if left untreated, the question is, how quickly? What others have recommended is good. If you're really short on time, you can try cleaning it really well with alcohol and applying several layers of touch-up paint to see how long that holds. Make sure it's dry before painting. I had a couple small spots on my 2001 where I did this, and I never had to re-visit the spots for 12+ years. Keep in mind that it will never be a smaller problem than it is today.

I agree with the opinion above Rust will spread and It can be going with high speed. But, as I see your rust stain is not as big and you can delete it with rust converters.

With their help, you can reduce the spread of rust and clean the surface from it.

Looks to me like your tailgate is rubbing on that point when you open it.

Keep it simple. Sand it to clean metal. Put some primer with the dollar store paint brush set. Put some paint on with another brush. This isn't like the chassis where you need to go insane with rust converters and fluid film.
