Rusty Smitty Bilt Sure Step Sidebars

Anyone got any good tips on getting rid of, or at least disguising the rust that accumulating on my Sidebars? Since its winter and its cold and wet all the time the rust "spots" have gotten a little out of control and it now looks pretty crappy.

I was thinking of removing the bars completely, cleaning them up, drying them and then dousing them in some rust killing solution and then maybe spraypainting them with some kind of Chrome spreay paint so they at least look nice again.

Think this will work or will the end result be a dodgy looking coverup.

+1 duplicolor sray on bedliner is the best, clean them with the wire wheel and paint it with the spray bedliner.

bigest problem with that stuff .. is there hollow !! and the insides were treated with nothing .. so most likely , the rust is coming from the inside out

if you were to treat the inside with some POR-15 or something like that , your chances of saving them would be greatly increased

Yeah thats what is happening, rusting from the inside out. Thats why I was thinking of dousing / soaking them in some rust repellent. 8)

i knew a guy who filled his with cement when they started to rust out from the inside, it worked as rock sliders pretty well till it finally fell off because there was no metal left to hold the cement lol
But dont try it its not worth it.

Treat the surface rust with several coats of rust converter. Permatex makes a good one. Then several coats of paint.
