After some convincing, my wife allowed me to uninstall the TRD exhaust on her 2020 TRD ORP after 1 year of use. The exhaust was so damn loud and drony on highway trips. My kids and I got headaches from it. The stock exhaust is back on and the truck is so much more enjoyable and refined (as it can be for the 4runner).

My wife still wants her 4runner to have some sound. For those that have the TRD intakes, how is the sound under load compared to stock? I know it will have more induction noise under full throttle as the tach swings past 4000rpms, but what about moderate throttle from a stop light or below under 3500rpms? What about throttle response during daily driving? Is it better or worse than stock?

Basically I'm looking to see if there is an obvious change in induction noise during normal, sub 4000rpm driving. I don't care about neutral revving because that never shows what an intake sounds like under load.

There is a slightly deeper roar, but didn’t notice a big difference when I made the switch. But it has been a couple years. No noticeable sound on the highway.

Not sure about acceleration response, using a sprint booster.

There's a bit of low-end grunt. I think it sounds pretty good for what it is, definitely not obnoxious sounding, just enough audio feedback that's more suited to the truck than hearing the hi-pitched engine whine w/o it.

When you've got the hammer down on that initial downshift it sounds like GTFO the way lol
 
You could remove the hemholtz resonators and insert cap/plugs w/hose clamps. That will increase the sound without having to do a full TRD CAI.

If you like it and want all the visual accouterment, then purchase the TRD CAI parts individually!
Use an OEM filter for quality filtration.

Yep. I removed and inspected the entire intake system a few nights ago. Takes all of 5 minutes to remove everything between the throttle body and fender. I ripped off the fibrous secondary filter glued to the intake face of the OEM air filter and then removed the filter that is plastic welded to the OEM air box. In 25 years of working on Asian, domestic, and German cars, I've never seen something like that embedded into an airbox. I'm not sure what function is serves. Admittedly, I didn't notice much of an increase, if any, in induction noise.

The resonators are super easy to remove and are definitely much of the reason for the reduced induction sound on these trucks. I'll likely take the intake snorkel to Home Depot and see what I could us as plugs. Then I'd make a vacuum port on one of the caps and extend the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator to that port (like stock). I'd then order the TRD intake "accelerator" intake horn and then maybe do an AFe dry air filter if she still wants some more induction noise.

the charcoal filter within the top lid absorbs unburnt fuel during engine shut off that isn't ignited. Typically just to reduce the smell of gasoline.

Good luck.. v6's just sound like very angry cows...

hey, new to forum and tryin to figure it all out.
ive been told that this TRD exhaust PTR03-89200 will fit my 2014. seein as its a 5th gen, i am assuming the pattern hasnt changed that much? as this part is 'only' for 20-21. now charles bronson says the sound is too much? something to consider.... how wa sperformance? and could any members give me a fitment answer? or an alternative?:thanks:

Fitment is same. Nothing has changed since 2014.
Some say the drone of the TRD exhaust it too much, while others say it isn’t.
That is going to be a personal choice obviously.
 
sounds like an angry wasps nest in my intake at WOT.....

Otherwise, you don't really hear it, unless you floor it. If you are expecting some kind of amazing sound.....you will be disappointed.

imma go with the flowmasterFX. half the price.tho i like the TRD turnout a lot. im not expecting magic out of it, its a 6... just another thing checked off my first 4runner build:der::der::der:
