I would think the hand throttle would be more effective if it was attached to something that didn't move. I personally wouldn't want my hand on the shifter too often, especially while bumping around on the trail--that could lead to popping out of gear, or at least wearing on the shifter fork. Just thinking out loud--I've never done one before.
 
Another option is "line locks" that drag racers use. It goes on the brake line and is electrically activated. Put one on a front tire, one on a back tire. When you put the brakes on you push a button that holds the brakes on till you release the button. The button goes on your shifter.
 
Yeah let us know how this works for sure. I have been thinkin of doin something similar for rock calling. But with a bike shifted instead so you can click it and set the throttle whrer you want it and leave it. The brake trick is ok but you run a really high risk of breaking it with all that torque on it

It has to be someplace I can easily place my hand. Possibly a mount on the steering wheel? Possibple mounted to the hand break? It will be easy to try a few different mounts and see what works best. I'll only be using it on very big rocks/staircases. Just climbing up rocky hills, I have no issue in 1st gear and 4lo.

The steering wheel is what I was thinking of. I know the cable routing may get complicated because of the wheel's rotation, but it's a stable platform that you will most-definitely need to have your hands on, and it gets them off the shifter. Maybe just one of those small two-finger grips that you could screw on to the rim before wheeling, then pop back off after. That's how ATV's do it, with a small thumb paddle on the handlebars--brace with the hand, throttle with the thumb (or a finger, in your case).
 
You could make it a remote type mount. Just get a tube that is the same size as a bicycle handle. Put a bike grip on it and mount that lever to it. That way you can hold it wherever the cable will reach and also move it out of the way when you're not using it.
 
The ones I've seen were old-style 10-speed shift levers mounted on the console or steering column, within easy reach if you had to adjust mid-climb. I don't know how well anything mounted to the steering would work, that sounds like a recipe for rapid unintended acceleration if something were to bind...

The idea for the remote mount might work, if you disabled the spring return in the brake handle so that you could set the throttle and then leave it, like a boat throttle. I don't know how well you're going to like trying to actively control the throttle with one hand and steer with the other. You ever try to pat your belly and rub your head at the same time? :D
 
For those that think the locking style is the way to go, there are plenty of those designs already built for that purpose--you'll find them in any truck with a PTO set-up (that's power-take-off, for those that haven't heard of it). They have to set the RPM's to maintain an even speed on whatever they're powering, so they have a simple dash-mounted throttle that you pull out to increase, then twist to lock. It's small, simple, and out of the way--would also work great for winching.
 
So I got a cable and got it in. It works as far as it being a 2nd throttle controlled by hand. I'll drive it around and try a few things and let you know how it works out. I can already tell you it will not stay on the shifter. I'm going to try the remote mount first.

The goal is to be able to throttle without using my foot.

BUT......I placed an order with 4xInnovations this morning. Should have something new by next week. I'll wait till have pics.
 
So here they are with their first coat of Rustoleum Hammered black. I'll do another coat, wash the whole rig and then mount them on!

When painting tubes I would hang them. That way they get sprayed even all the way around and you dont have to wait for paint to dry to flip them.
