S.S. Minnow Build Thread

Gonna be a busy month for the Minnow! Ordered extended break lines from Trail Gear and a battery box from Summit Racing (LOOOOOOONG overdue on the box). Drove up to Denver to visit our friends at Toytec Lifts and picked up my ball joint spacers and front shocks. I hope to get them installed by Monday. Also stopped at Pull and Pay and picked up a MAF and a couple loose wires that need to be replaced. Also found a SR5 rim cap and grabbed it just because they are hard to find. Now I have two extras in case I lose them. Got home, cleaned my entire intake system and put back together with a new filter to boot.

Just a note on why it has taken so long to get the lift in. The USPS trashed the box that mpleitz sent me and some parts were lost in transit. Filing a claim with the USPS takes a little bit of time and the claim was finally settled and I got my parts. mpleitz as been awesome to deal with in case he ever sells anything else. The parts he sent me were as good as promised (minus the USPS screw up). The second we settled things, I started building. Hopefully I will have more pics before the weekend is out.

I bet some worn out 35" baja claws will look really nice on your runner when the lift is done :D

The rears still have about 25-30% tread though :biggrin2:

I guess we'll find out. I just made a guy on CL an offer on a set of 4 Baja Claws. He's looking to down grade.

Oh! Also picked up a new starter today just to eliminate that mess of worry.

That would be sweet! I loved my baja's when they had tread on them. But I think my cranked down torsion bars ate my tires up a bit fast on the front. The tires took all the punishment because the front suspension wasn't moving as it should.


Are you gonna get a rebuild kit for your old starter?
 
Hey Bill, why didn't you say you were looking for worn out 35's?! I have some of those, some BFG Mud T/A's well past their prime--don't mind that the shipping alone would probably be more than they're worth. Of course, you'd have to wait until I get my shiny new ones, but hey...

I don't know if I want 35's yet. My gut tells me 33.
 
I think that when we get your lift done we need to slap on some 35's and go to B St.

The only thing I'm not sure of is if you'll have the front end clearance for them. But you'll still do really well with 33's though. ooohhhh choices :D

I'm sure I can get fit them in, not sure if I'll be able to turn them. There's always the 35x10.5 option. never been one for tall and skinny. I like them to be filled out just a little.

I like the "yet" part of your comment. The more we build up our trucks the more we go out a try all the fun dumb ass stuff. :lmao:"He look at me, I'm going right over this rock, oh hey look at me now, all high centered and stuff."

Are you on 32"s AT now? There isn't too much of a difference between 32 and 33 unless the 33's are Mud tires, then you gain quite a bit in traction offroad. 32 vs 33 AT not much difference. Do it...you know waaann-it. Isn't Colorado all flat anyway, not a mountain in sight.

Lots of problems with 35s, though. FoG has a manual, so he could get stock gearing with 5.29s, but he's still got to lift significantly, or tub like a M***F***er to make 'em fit, and then there's the question of whether they're going to rub on the frame when he turns or if he has to get new rims or spacers to shove them out far enough, and that brings scrub radius into play... I think 33s are a good compromise for a DD.

The Minnow is not "exactly" a DD. I keep my eye out for a little 4 banger to use as a DD. My wife is currently deployed, so I have her little mazda for now. I'm leaning towards 33" MT's. I honestly feel that will be the best choice after my lift is done. Since SV Dude just got new rubber, we are going to tryout his old 35's and see what it is like. I'm not opposed to spacers if that will make them work.
 
Nothing wrong with a little rubbing as long as it isnt hurting the tire....

I feel that if your tires DONT rub.. then you have room for bigger tires.. :jump: And yes... I love that sawzall pic. Haha.
 
If you have the right wheels with the correct offset, there's no need for spacers.

I'm anxious to see if my old 35's will fit his runner. That would be sweet if he can get the 35's to fit.

FoG: You know you want 35's :D
