Sad day for the runner.

I don't really like the term buyback. You are requesting a cash payout instead of repairs. If they say it is totaled then they HAVE to pay you the full totaled "value" - you have the right to keep the broken vehicle and the money.

They can't just seize your property.

No, once they pay you the full value of the vehicle (in lieu or repairs), the insurance company now owns it. If you choose (as the former owner) to buy it back for cheap, you get first dibs. Otherwise the insurance company will sell it to a junkyard. It isn't your property anymore once you take the check out of their hands.

I remember seeing a post by one of the SO-CAL guys who, after suffering an LBJ accident, got back $8000 on his 3rd gen with 200,000k miles and kept the truck. He had USAA (I think) and said they counted his aftermarket in the price.

I know that USAA will include the cost of bumpers in the repair. I have them and when I had a small front end accident they sent me a check (separate from the repairs) for my after-market pre-runner bar and bug shield.

As far as the buyback goes - that sucks. I am not an expert on this stuff. Also the law might be different state to state.

So he didn't get much for the bumpers after all. But I did get ~$500 back for my pre-runner bar and bugshield from USAA about 5 years ago.

For Pikeman, the salvage was $1350+$500 deductable, leaving him about $6,000 AND the broken truck. This was southern CA & USAA is pretty much the BEST insurance company in the country but it is for Military and Veterans only.

FYI for those of you that think Prices and values are to high on our Runners well insurance [USAA] valued mine at $7800 with 230k on it. After sending in my receipts for my bumpers and stuff they only added $150. bringing it to $7950. The salvage was $1350+$500 deductable gave me $6k but I still owed 4K so have 2K to handle all the repairs.

Yeah, Pikeman bought his truck back. He would have gotten a bigger check from his insurance if he wouldn't have chosen to buy it back, but he made the right decision IMO. I think he said he bought it back for ~$1200 IIRC. The only bad thing is, it's a salvage title after it's been totaled so the resale value is about 1/2 of normal blue book even after it's repaired. Normally, once it's a salvage title, it's always a salvage title.

In Pikeman's case, it doesn't matter though, because he plans to keep building and wheeling it. If he sells it, he would get less for it than a clean title, but he came out with a few grand in his pocket so it all works out to be about the same.

I worked for Farmers Ins. for a couple years so I dealt with this a lot. :)

Sorry to see this happen to your 4Runner, and it's good to see that it did it's job and kept you protected during the crash.

No matter how it works out financially, it's still a bummer, and moving all those mods from the old truck to a new one is a lot of work. I hope everything works out for the best.

Would my coulovers swap into a 4th gen? And would my new ring and pinions for to?

No the coilovers won't work. They have a different set up on the 4th gen. I'm not sure about the gears.

That really sucks about your 4runner especially since you got all the paint work done on all of it. I feel though without the bumper your 4runner would probably still have a bent frame and major front end damage due to the mailbox you hit. The rest of the body might have not as much crumpled damage, but still a good amount of damage.

a little pricy.. I got my '99 fully loaded (limited) with 115k for around 8,500.

I say just get a new 3rd gen and switch over everything.. DUHH!!

That's a nice one. That price is scary though. I say offer like 9 or 10 grand.

And why replace an e-locker with a grizzly?
