well gas prices here are horrible! almost $3.60 most wouldnt mind getting 23mpg with a 4wd but im going to college so im pretty much broke.... i came acrost a 1987 chevy sprint turbo, the guy traded me strait over for a old 4 wheeler and even did a complete tune up! its pulling 58 mpg on average! so the ol' 4runner is gonna go home for a few years... until after i graduate or until i have some money for gas. maybe a weekend worrier for awhile. i just needed to vent... im kinda sad until i start thinking about getting 60mpg! haha

I know what you mean. I am in Albuquerque and our gas is pricey too. Luckily I am a little (well a lot) older than you and make a decent living so to combat the gas prices I have a Jetta TDI diesel wagon that gets approx 45 MPG and a Vulcan Motorcycle that gets 60 MPG. When I have to drive far, I take one of those.

My 4Runner is just a recreational toy so I use it when I want to enjoy it.

Sounds like you made a smart financial move, but those can sometimes break your heart!

Sorry to hear, good luck with your new car. Checked our mpg on the 1990 V6, and it has been getting 11mpg with that darned ethanol/winter mix petrol. Thankfully, the truck does not get more then 1-2k annually. I'm sure gas prices will go over $4, so everyone will be feeling the pinch.

i have a buddy that lives in a town about 20 min from me and he has an 85 toyota truck with a 6in lift and 34x10.5x15's with 5.29 V6 gears. he is getting 44mpg!!! i know all of u are calling BS on that but before i finish i should mention that he has a brand new rebuilt desiel VW Jetta motor in it! it has a nice little hummmmm to it. not gonna lie i am way jelous! but desiel is up to 4.19 here so im not that jelous.

just thought it was interesting. the whole swap only cost him about $800 because his wife crashed the Jetta the motor came out of. you might be able to find a build up on yota tech he said somthing about making a profile on there to show people what he did

Gas mileage

If you take a break on the 4runner like that, it'll be around for many more years than you had anticipated.

I'm glad to see that 20-25 is normal mileage for my 87. I had wondered about that.

I know the feeling. I had sold my daily driver (2002 VW Jetta GL) a few years back in favor of my 4Runner when I was driving only 6mi to work. I just took a different store, and now with a 45mi commute it was time for another Jetta. 35mpg beats 18, but the 4Runner isn't going away... One thing the wife can't convince me to part with.

That's about the only thing I don't like about my runner. I really miss my honda civic (~35mpg) now that gas is getting crazy again but I still love this truck even with the 15mpg. We just drive my wifes toyota matrix when we have to go far.
Like Morania stated, giving your runner a nice long break like that will make it last even longer for you to enjoy later
