Safari snorkel on a 5th gen?

After cutting away pretty much all of my inner fender I was thinking of doing a fender "snorkel" mod. This is considering the intake hole is in the front and running down fast dirt roads with no fender to block dust is just going to clog things up. Not to mention when it rains and potential mist going in. So I am subscribing in hopes tis snorkel comes about.

So after spending about 20 minutes on the phone with the Safari brand rep at ARB in Renton, I have a few more details regarding the 5th Gen Snorkel.

As mentioned above, Safari will be sending a rep over from AUS. During that time, they will be doing a few test fittings. These include an "off tool" fitment of the 2nd Gen Tacoma snorkel, a 3D model fitment of the 4th Gen 4Runner snorkel, and a 3D model fitment of the 5th Gen Snorkel.

To put that in a little bit of perspective, back in November of 2014, the snorkel on the 2nd Gen Tacoma was the original fitment of the 3D model. They have since made the tooling for the Tacoma snorkel and wil be doing the original fitment during the mid-March visit to ARB USA.

His prediction was the 5th Gen Snorkel will not take as long as the Tacoma snorkel to tool and get into production. He said there have been delays in the Tacoma snorkel, to include the fact a lot of Australia companies shut down in December for their summer months (according to him).

With that info, as long as there are not any major hiccups in the design and tooling, we could very well see the final product by this Summer. I will be calling them back after the March visit to get his opinion on how the 3D model fitment went.

Regardless, this is definitely coming, so I am excited. I will be waiting for the Safari snorkel because I feel it is a superior product. I have run a Safari snorkel on my 98 Tacoma for the past 10 years and it looks brand new. Another cool tidbit he mentioned is that the snorkel body could be run over by your vehicle and it will not collapse. Can't say that about the fiberglass models.

Hope these details help everyone out.

Jason

Edit: For futher clarification, a 3D model is produced by taking 3D scans of the fender, windshield, and inside the engine compartment. In addition, they perform flow tests on the intake to ensure the Safari snorkel is not reducing the factory air flow in any way. Once the 3D model is made up, it has to be test fitted. After the 3D model is test fitted and additional air flow tests are performed, they make the necessary changes and create the tooling. That is when they produce the off tool design and test fit it. If everything is good to go, they begin producing the final product.

Any update here?

Can't wait for the jicko group buy on this one... gotta save my pennies! Hopefully we get more news soon.

:bump:

Just got this email today:

Hi Justin,

The snorkel is in the works. However, because we do not make the snorkel (we are only a distributor) and there are a few other snorkels on the priority list, I don’t currently have an ETA on when the snorkel will be completed.

Your best bet will be to check back with us every month or so, follow us on Facebook (fb.com/arbusa), or I can sign your email up for new product releases for Toyota product.

Let me know if you would like me to add you to the ARB Toyota mailing list or if you have anymore questions. Cheers!

Big update on the status of 5th, 4th gen 4runners and 2nd gen Tacomas.

Direct from ARB.

We have a representative from Safari Snorkels that will be fitting some prototype snorkels starting tomorrow on the 6 cyl and 8 cyl 4th gen 4runner as well as the new 5th gen 4runner. Stay tuned for updates we should have better information next week.

Awesome!

"The new 5th gen" haha. Gee ARB, way to stay on top of things.

Seriously though, that's great news. Good to see more and more aftermarket support for the 5th gens.

Not sure I'd go for the snorkel though - I have very few instances where I think I'd really need it.

Not gonna lie though, I'd totally install one just to look cool once I've ran out of other stuff to buy, haha.

But if you had it you'd be more likely to put yourself in a place where you need it!

Honestly all I needed was to see the video where the new Jeep hydrolocks going too fast through not so deep water to sell me on it. Sometimes I do stupid things too...

After driving through the Oregon desert and sucking in about half of the BLM land's dirt...I can see value in moving the air intake higher. I'm not going to ford a river though.

Both good points. I usually don't get too carried away with fording, but I see myself needing one once I cut my fenders and install 35s, since my liners will probably have to go. Extra splash protection.

I've spent far too much time and money to turn back now on my truck, snorkels rule!

I see someone has the inside scoop on the progress. Nice to see some pics of her. Glad I washed her before I took it in.

Sooooo, how were you the lucky one? Can't wait to get mine. Oh, and I will be the first to admit it will primarily be for looks!

I feel like a snorkel on a T4R without upgraded front/rear bumpers just looks weird. So I may save the snorkel for next summer if I decide to get drunk, order some absurdly expensive bumpers, and prepare my 4R for the upcoming water wars a la Fury Road.
