It's a weird hobby, but I like to check out old graves and imagine what those folks lives were like. Take somebody born in 1880 and dead in 1960 - they were born in a house with no electricity and no indoor plumbing, they saw the advent of the telephone, radio, television, they saw humanity go from discovering internal combustion to landing probes on the Moon. And yesterday I had to teach my 1 year old son that the TV in the front room is not a touchscreen like his mom's cell phone. It blows me away.

Check page 327 of the 2015 manual. It states that "Safety service is available by subscription on select, telematics hardware-equipped vehicles. and then show the ceiling console.

I definitely don't have that (in fact that is where all the Trail crawl control and KDSS switches are).

So, without the module which contains the cellular stuff we are not running around pinging cell towers as we drive and there is no way Toyota could be calling up our 4Runner and communicating with it.

I think Toyota gave you mis-information that ALL vehicles have it. Even their own literature says "select vehicles".

Edit: I also just checked My Vehicle on Toyota under "Connected Services" and it confirms. Says:
