Well, having owned many many 4R's and GX's - I have to say my experience with the 5th gen was far from stellar. We bought a 2011 limited 4wd with 7k miles, BWP, loaded up except no nav. Seemed perfect but so far I can say that it was by far the worst 4R we've owned.

Overall I feel the build quality was far inferior to both our 08 GX and our 07 limited 4R, the 5th gen had terrible acceleration, poor towing rating and sub par gas mileage. Everything from the panel gaps to the interior quality seemed to have been downgraded, just not the toyota I'm used to

Honestly I'm a bit shocked, I'm a huge fan of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in general - I'm a 3 toyota car family, but this 4runner was the worst we've ever had.

We only had one real PROBLEM with her, the drivers power seat stopped functioning, so it wasn't so much that we had issues with the car I just didn't love it the way I did my other 4runners, something always felt off about it. At the end of the day I think the lack of power for an SUV that grew substantially in size and weight was disappointing. I found myself having to make excuses or modify/"fix" things to compensate for things I could do better in other 4Rs.

I kept telling myself as soon as a TRD super charger were available I'd do that and be happier, I installed air bags to up the towing rating to something slightly better than a minivan - net net I wish we had kept the 08 GX, or the 07 limited v6 - Both of which were far more capable in my opinion.

I even went and drove the GX460, and felt it too lacked any real improvement over the previous generation, I can't put my finger on it but I'm sadly disappointed with this generation 4R...

The straw for me was after 6 months, we had averaged about 14mpg, and the 4runner could barely tow my supra in an open trailer - 4800 lbs total - I'm not trying to tow a 12k lb camper, just 4800 lbs, and the 4runner struggled with every uphill or onramp - in our 07, we regularly towed 6000+ lbs with little issue.

In the end we have chosen to go back to the land cruiser family and settled on a 2010 L200, the extra power is welcome for towing for sure - and so far we're averaging better gas mileage (15.6 vs 14.2) - I fully acknowledge there is a huge price difference in the vehicles, not trying to compare them apples to apples but the L200 is the experience I wanted out of the current generation 4runner, it's the quality I've come to expect from Toyota and the capability I need... (although I'd argue our 07 LC was a far tighter vehicle in terms of tolerances than the 2010 is)

I wanted to share my experience, but certainly am not bagging on or discouraging anyone from ownership, it just wasn't right for us.

I will say their resell is staggering, I bought the car 6 months ago for 36, put 14k miles on it, and sold it for 35,300... so it cost me 700$.

i dont know, i towed heavy trailer with honda odyssey on it and it towed great. no electrical brakes, no air bags, nothing special for towing everything stock.
i dont have that much of experience in towing though, just saying...

I agree there has been some change in overall quality and fit/ finish. But, you still can't find a better SUV in the $30-40k price range.......as evidenced by your $60k replacement. Enjoy the LC!

Did you notice the acceleration during the test drive?

Did you read the max towing in the brochure before Purchasing?

Panel gaps? Where - Mine all look tight

Overall interior quality? Did you look at the 4R in the light before you bought it?

The straw for me was after 6 months, we had averaged about 14mpg,

I get a constant 17mpg and I drive it hard, fast acceleration and 99% in town driving.

You bought it used, sounds like you bought one that had some serious issues! Maybe the original owner ripped apart the dash and could not put it back right? Those MPG are a joke and NOT normal for anyone here. Wonder if the original owner tried to mod the truck and failed miserably and the dealership did not catch it?

Best of luck with your new ride!

All of this x2

If I had an extra $30k I'd probably prefer the LC too. Lucky for me I'm coming from an Xterra so my expectations aren't high.

Congrats on the purchase though - hope it works out better for you.

Alright. I usually do not voice my opinion in threads like these because they can get that anywhere.
I have read many many posts such as this over the years and I see a common thought process with almost every one of them. Ready? Justification, or buyers remorse, or peer pressure. I am quite sure this OP will call me crazy and I'm not picking on him per se but this is just like almost every one of the other posts telling why they are getting rid of a perfectly good brand new vehicle. This is not just with Toyota 4Runners it is with any large purchase.

Here is the basic form:

Well, after a few months of owning this "X" vehicle let me tell you I am disappointed. It doesn't do "X" or "Y" or "Z" and the quality in so so and the power, or gas milage, or paint, or handling or something, is terrible. So I am sad to see her go but I settled on a (whatever they really wanted in the first place)and I am happy now. Everyone see the pattern?

I have read a few that I felt were genuine, especially when it comes to towing because no matter what nothing beats a diesel when towing. So those ones I understand.

Probably most of these people went to look at a new vehicle, got caught up in the whole moment of buying and got something they really did not want. I understand this. I have been there. One thing I don't understand though: Why post your dissatisfaction in a place where very few feel the same way? It would be much better if you posted this same story over on the LC board. They would sympathize with you and congratulate you and welcome you with open arms.

I work with machines. I understand machines. Things like this is why I don't work with people. They make no sense. The build quality of a typical 5G 4Runner is much better than most vehicles. The features and power, while not the best, are certainly adequate for a vehicle in this price range. The 4Runner does have some quirks: It is a true multipurpose vehicle and is designed as such. And gas milage? I get 22 on long trips. I get 16-18 around town. I have averaged 19.9 overall in almost 30K miles. This is good. This is typical based on other's experiences.

Sorry OP, this sounds just like a typical form letter to me because you didn't get what you wanted the first time. Good luck with your LC.

I agree with zmw 100%. I am ready to get a new 4runner to replace my 2003 V8. Everytime I test drive the 5th gen I walk away disappointed.

New owner of a 2012 black LE here.....and I could not be happier with it.... I'm coming from a 2010 Audi S4 that was modded big time.... I completely understand the 4runner will not have the pick up the Audi did but i guess it all comes down to why you bought the car/truck in the first place.... I needed more room and this is perfect.... (probably pop on a SC down the road though!)

I'm wondering if he ever reset the MPG counter? I do this every week just to get a more accurate gauge on my MPG. Otherwise, it'll take the average from day one and you'll never see it move much and think the mpg sucks.

I went through the same review process and if you do a search, you'll find my write-up on my reviews on large SUV's. I'll be adding the mid-level ones soon. It IS an apples to orange comparison as everyone knows. But for the price and reliability factor, it couldn't be beat. Too many of today's "SUV's" have faux 4wd/awd systems to cater to the crossover crowd. Unfortunately Ford, GM, Dodge and now Nissan (new Pathfinder spy photos) have bought into it to sell "SUV's." For me, based on my needs, I narrowed things down to the Dodge Durango and the 4Runner. I'll be honest, I enjoyed the HEMI V8 and everything about the Durango. But my biggest fear was reliability. Although CR gave it top points for the first year, my concern is what happens after year 3? That really narrowed it down to just the 4Runner.

I've also fixed the acceleration problem by driving w/ a lead foot for a week for the ECU to figure out my gas-guzzling NASCAR habits. I have decent acceleration now :) So my only real beef so far is the lack of a power antenna, memory seats, and back-up sensor.

As 1engineer stated, for the price range, there is no real competition for the 4Runner based on price, capabilities, and reliability. As Bofa stated, if I had an extra $30k, I would also be in an LC or gasp...Sequioa ($15-20k more).

Good luck with your new ride though. The LC is a sweet suv.

My first car was a 3rd gen 4runner and I loved it. I modded it and wheel the piss out of it. I got rid of it last year, when I hit 252K because the repairs I needed to do (Axle seals, cv axle, tires, etc) were no longer worth it. I would only drive it around town since I bought an Acura TL to drive on long trips.

The month after I got rid of my 4runner, I started to regret it. The space I had in it was invaluable and there was a big difference in driving the TL. Don't get me wrong, the TL, was a very nice car to drive, but it just didn't fit me, if that makes sense.

In May of 2011, I started looking at 4runners and Feb of 2012, I found one I wanted. I traded my Acura and bought the 4runner. Now, does the 4runner have a lot of power, not really. Is it a big improvement from the 3rd gen, definitely! I dont expect it to do 0-60 in 3.4 and I dont expect it to ride like a Lexus or another highend vehicle. I expected exactly what I got out of it.

Sorry your 4runner did fit you and your family...

But I am damn jealous about the LC!:lookout::drummer:

I'm 100% with zmw. But unfortunately, with inflation and trying to price a product appropriately, the quality of any product will be compromised. IMO the 3rd gen is the best build 4R compare to any gen. Drove a family member 01 4R Ltd for over a year and fell in love with the quality of that vehicle. Hence I wanted a 4R as my next vehicle, but like zmw said, the 5th gen just falls short of everything. After thoroughly test driving all the models of the 5th gen, I keep telling myself that I can deal with the lack of power and the cheap interior(compare to 3rd gen), its the "Utilitarian" of the vehicle I need so I just settle with it.

I've gotta ask: Why don't you and "03" up there just go to a different brand then? Or buy an '09 4Runner with low miles? Why bash? Do you guys think you can "wish" a V8 into the 5G 4Runner? Go get something else. The 5G is what it is. Like it or get something else or keep driving what you have.

Do the 5th Gen V6s have more HP than 4th gen V8s? It's a genuine question. I pulled-up next to a guy with with a 4th Gen once and he was complimenting my truck and then complaining that my truck with the 4.0 V6 had more HP than his V8. I never bothered to look it up, but I found it interesting. Any truth to it?

Maybe you should press accelerator a bit harder next time you test drive 5th gen. Looks like all 4Runners after 1996 have pretty decent acceleration.

Not Bashing, Im just agreeing with what ZMW said. I knew what i was getting, I need a vehicle with the utility aspect of it and of course toyota's reputation in reliability is a added bonus. I was looking at the 08-09 4R UrbanRunner, but everyone wanted too much for it. They were going for $29-$32k with 35k+ miles LAST year around this time. Thinking to my self that I could get a brand new 2011 4R for not much more. Keep in mind that the "UrbanRunner" was stickered at $34k in 08-09 and there was a hugh discount on them. I couldnt pull the trigger on a new one in 08 due to the insecurity of my job and the "Great Recession."

I was not hoping for a v8 nor do i want a v8. But compare to the 4th gen v6, that has a little more pickup and go.

I accepted the 5th gen for what it is and thats why I still have it. There is really no "TRUE" SUV out there anymore.

maybe it is just a blind spot in my thinking but honestly I have never looked at or fooled with the display that gives the mpg calculation

no way it could be accurate given the way errors integrate over time
besides from what I read, those that do the math and compare find that the car computer is optimistic

if you cannot fill up to a consistent level and calculate using your odo or gps then you do not know your mileage
