same problem again after oil change WTH?

4WD 4RNR

Ok About 3 months ago I did a oil change 0n my 06 4.0 4runner. That next day i drove it i notice that acceleration was very poor and continued for a month or so. I changed plugs, cleaned air mass sensor, changed air filter and put better gas in. After that month passed I was using midgrade gas and it was driving great again. Now Im back at the same problem again. I use Valvoline 5w30 and the dip stick reads full. Im puzzled and upset that ive wasted my time and money and still no improvement. I would greatly appreciate any info. Thanks David

when you cleaned the maf sensor, did u sprayed the red thing u first see? if you did, thats the wrong part to spray contact cleaner, you have to spraed the smaller tube where the actual wire its at. also did you run some injector cleaner? i use lucas oil, and it works for me.

On my way home from work is when I noticed. I had to pass someone and when I gave it some gas it did not do much, I then punched it, and it strained to pass them. Far as the tranny Im taking it to a transmission shop to have a free look. I disconnected the battery this evening. Still unsure what needs to be done.

If oil is overfilled, it'll foul the MAF. Make sure your just at or below the full mark on the dipstick.

I put in 5.5 quarts of oil and I used a pureolator gold filter. I checked my oil this morning and it was slightly above the full mark on the dip stick. Thought this was very odd, Its normally full after I add the 5.5 not over full. I did drain some and made my 25 mile drive to work. Was running fine and was actually thinking that was the problem, but when I hit the gas so it would down shift and go, it stumbled a little. I will remove the MAF and clean it but other than that im still confused. My friends 07 4runner holds 5.5 quarts no problem. However the maintenance light was not on when i did the oil change. Does anything need to be reset?

If you use the 5qt jugs of oil, they are not actually 5, but 5.1. That could account for your extra oil.

But would the .1 plus the .6 cause it to run rough intermittently. Just drove it to lunch and its wores than before. When I came back I checked all fluids, everything is good and the oil is at the full mark. When I was driving I did shift to neutral and lightly reved it and its would not create rpms easily. Put it back in drive and it and the problem continues, no power. Like its luged down. Im out of options and cant afford to have the stealership to tell me the same thing again. Any ideas guys???

no lights on the dash or nothin? changing oil really shouldnt effect perfomance? a brake caliper draging can cause it to feel like its "lugged down" I do know that if you have certain codes thrown in your DTC's it will run the truck in "limp" mode you won't be able to build more than like 1500-2000 rpm and it has almost zero acleration about it. just not sure what your exact problem is. Fresh oil shouldnt change anything. I've over filled mine above the fill mark by an 1/8th and just said F-it and drove fine without problems its gonna burn a little off anyway. the MAF doesnt have to be spotless to work its going to see dirt and oil over long periods of time unless its just completly filmed over with oil then it should be fine to. what kind of rpm's are you seeing at idle?

No light on dash and the brakes are not grabbing. It idled at 500 yesterday then 750 today. When i need to accelerate fast or punch it It feels like its resticted by something like clooged cats. When I feel that its acting up i then quickly put it in neutral and try to rev it, but it strains to rev then after trying to rev it clears up. I then put it back in drive and the symptom is back.

cleaned ur throttle body butterfly valve lately (if it's sticking u can loose throttle response)

certainly a puzzle I'll do some research and get back to u soon

Thanks, I will give that try and see what happens. However I made an appointment on the 25th with a toyota specialist and he will drive it and look at it for a few days all for $40. Hoping he can give me an answer. Till then its parked.

Did the throttle body cleaning and drove it 10 miles. No difference even witha full tank of fresh gas. Still need some ideas till i take it in.

just trying to go back to the drawing board.. your saying you didnt have this problem before the oil change correct?

Did the old oil filter seal ring come off with the old filter? (is there a chance you've doubled up oil filter o-ring gaskets) you said that this is the same problem after oil change as if you've had this problem before, what did you do to solve the issue before?

This is a clear case of misunderstanding causality and correlation..

or in layman's terms... mere coincidence. I don't see anything close to causality in terms of your oil change. A normal change would not produce the results you are talking about. A HUGE engine sludge problem MAY, but if you have that much sludge in your engine... I wouldn't be driving it and trying to figure out the best way to clean it.

As far as I know.. the 4th gen runners have not had the sludge problem that older runners and tacomas had.

My personal opinion? Your focusing TOO much on the oil change issue, when even if closely timed, in my opinion from what you described, has little connection.

In grad school, I was told this: Just because you see people who swim buying slushes, doesn't mean swimming makes people want one. We know, now, it is the heat...

but.. if you didn't know any better... you would think jumping in a pool made one want one.

The two are CORRELATED... but there isn't causality.

So. My suggestion? Ignore the OIL CHANGE and focus solely on your symptoms.

Oil Sludge can cause strain/sluggishness... but too have that level of sludge, you either need to have not maintained the vehicle or have some huge design flaw. The Older Runners, for example, did have a bad/sludge prone design...

Usually with BAD sludge you have a PSI issue.. the oil pump can't get the oil moving at the right amount due to the blockage..

Anyway. Just thoughts.

mere coincidence. .

Agreed.
Too much oil, like 2 or more quarts extra can cause a sluggish engine due to the pistons slapping the oil in the crankcase on the down stroke. If you are near the full line, this doesn't sound like your issue.

Did you use a straight 50w oil? Is it freezing out? This also could cause a sluggish engine.

The 4runner ran good besides the tranny but thats being fix with a simply flush. The first time I noticed the problem was the previous oil change. That next day it drove like ****, then after a month with this problem I decided to run mid grade gas then the problem was gone. Not sure If that was the case. Truck was problem free for two months(besides the lil tranny issue)But now Im back in the same situation. Did the oil change last weekend and it acks like its in straining to accelerate at times. I know I did the oil change correct and dont think this is related to the problem, its just happens every time the oil is changed.

You are looking at too many spurious data points.

Gas Grade shouldn't have any real noticeable impact. It has been discussed to almost the point of overkill here that our trucks handle 87 fine, 89 perfectly, and 91 or 93 is not worth it.

Bad gas is different.. but at this point, I think you might need a professional inspection. It happens. I think you are somewhat stuck in the weeds...

It could be something totally unrelated, like, fyi.. a stuck or sticking brake. Who knows.
