San Diego, where do you go for day runs?

I'm from Fallbrook and my whole family resides in North County (Carlsbad, San Marcos, Escondido, Fallbrook) and I sometimes feel like doing a bit of off-roading when I visit but never know where to go for a few hours. Anza is a bit too far, what are the best spots to hit for day trips?

I think your post has drawn a blank because people in San Diego mostly drive their over-built, over-priced rigs to breweries, the ORW parking lot, up and down Mission Blvd, or to tow their jet skis to Mission Bay. :dancin: Well, of course, this doesn't apply to any 4Runner owners.

Depending upon where in SD people live, Anza is a day run. There is also some stuff you can do at Corral Canyon/Buckman Springs and some in the Mt. Laguna and Julian areas. Dirtopia has a list of trails that I think is kept fairly up-to-date. I've heard a lot of the nearby trails that used to be popular have been gated or developed which is why people tend to go east.

Offcamber nailed it. Anza is a day run for me since I'm right off the 76 freeway so as long as I leave early in the morning I can get out there in about 1.5 hours. 4Running Daily used to go to Deer Springs off the 15 frwy around Escondido, but last I heard the gates were locked and people were getting tickets. Never been out there myself. Palomar Mountain has some trails on the back side I saw when doing some scouting in Google Earth, but I haven't made any trips off pavement out there except for the Nate Harrison Road going up the front side of the mountain. Basically a scenic dirt road. I think there is/was thr Wildomar OHV park in the Murrieta area, but again, never ventured out there.

i was just scoping out everything around palomar on dirtopia but it all seems pretty mellow. could still be fun though. my wife likes mellow.

If anyone is thinking about going there, just don't. Mostly single track and it's quite a drive to get there even for people that are local. Big waste of time for sure

I can make it to Idyllwild in just over 2 hours from Ocean Beach, so it should be really close to you, an hour and 15-25min for sure. Lots of fun stuff out there.

Anza-Borrego, of course.

Coyote Canyon, north of Borrego Springs is a great drive, especially during wildflower bloom. There are three creek crossings. I was by myself on my stock first-gen so I only went to the first crossing (here) the trail supposedly gets more technical after that.

Also started out to do Painted Gorge near Ocotillo (Different from Ocotillo Wells) with the San Diego ORV Club (Facebook Group), but ended up on a more technical road. This is the easier part of it...

Ya I'm about 20 min from bee canyon or rousche truck trail. Have spent a lot of time up there, we had a group run a few years ago up there too. All very easy scenic stuff

There are also a few trails of Pamo Rd. in Ramona. Nothing very technical that i have found yet, but there are some good views to see.
