Satoshi Grill Mod - 5th Gen

Well after waiting and waiting and waiting for grillcraft to come up with a grill for our 5th Gen 4Runners I finally gave up and decided I would do a custom Satoshi grill instead.

I've been wanting to do this mod for awhile now and I came across a used 5th gen grill off of Ebay so I decided to grab it so I could experiment.

What I used:
1 used 5th Gen Grill - Doesn't matter the color, you can swap out the painted trim piece with your own, you just need the black grill underneath.
1 universal grill - I got mine from www.GrilleGuy.com. I ordered the RAZR black powder coated

I'm only about 80% of the way done, I have the used grill and the universal one cut up to spec, but I need to do some finishing touches, attach the universal grill, and re-install. I hope to have it on by this weekend.

Are you planning on doing the lower grille down in the bumper as well? I'd think you'd want to do that in order to keep things consistent.

you beat me to it too... i've been looking into/at this for a while now, but reluctant to cut up my factory grill without a clear plan.

can you post some close-ups? looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I have to say Thank you very much for the inspiration. I did not think it would be as easy as it was until I saw your pics in the post.

So I found this stuff on Ebay for like $25, just black mesh grill material. After installing I think it is too transparent, so I am searching for another alternative. Also have not decided weather to put Toyota emblem back on or not. It looks really plain the way it is. I feel like it needs something more, just looks like a big black hole now.

I'd say paint it with a stainless/titanium paint to give it some depth..........and as already mentioned, add the Toyota emblem back to it to give it some dimension.

Looks good BFLAN!! Mine should be done tomorrow assuming the mesh I ordered is delivered. When I put a grillcraft on my Tacoma I used high-temp grill paint and sprayed everything behind the grill. Looked a lot better.

And I wouldn't put the stock grill emblem back on, look for the word Toyota to better fill that space if that's what you're looking for.

Can you post a pic of the backside of the grill with the OEM Grill/Emblem? I want to see if those pieces are able to be separated. I'm thinking of pulling the grill, disassembling the chrome from the grill, insert mesh, reconnect the chrome to the grill and call it a day to see what it looks like.

Still looks better than stock. I also can't decide on old 'TOYOTA' name, the Toyota logo, or leave it empty. Either way, like I said, much better than stock!

Spray paint the back side of it (AC condenser) black and you'll be happy with it.

Good to see one finally finished. I'd like to find a mesh that was as close to the OEM mesh as possible.

hard to tell from the pics, but because the stock mesh is completely flush/integrated with the outermost edge of the grill (not recessed at all) it seems hard to attach a new mesh and still have the edges clean all around. it looks like an additional trim piece will be required to completely wrap around the DIY mesh in order to have it look clean (e.g., stock).

am i wrong? :shrug:

No task is too great....next mod on the burner.
I agree with Quentin...it needs to be as close to OEM as possible
