Satoshi mod help

Well, I've had my 98 limited for about a month now. The mod bug has been biting ever since I parked it in my driveway. Holding off due to other responsibilities has been hard, so I decided to give myself something to work on that would keep me busy and not thinking of the other, more expensive mods that could be done.

I do have a few questions though. Scouring the forum, I have found lots of people who have done this mod. Most have bought an aftermarket grill on eBay. Are there any suggestions of who to buy from? I'm also wondering about where to get the emblems from.

Thanks for the help in advance!

I just used my stock grill and ordered my emblem off ebay. There are a couple pics of mine a little ways back in the "what did you do to your 3rd gen today" thread.

Nice. I was going back through that thread and saw that you got a nice hood all figured out. That's on my list at some point as well.

I just bought mine off of EBAY. If I could do it again I would have picked one up from a scrapyard. The ones on EBAY have super super cheap chrome paint. Mine is starting to fade and its only been 2.5 years.

I believe I paid $75-$85 and it came with the emblem.

I highly recommend getting the 96,97,98 grill and NOT the 99+ grill.

When I did mine, I used my stock grille as well. However, whenever I do one for somebody I buy it from partsgeek.com. For the chrome trim grille it's $63 shipped, for the primered black grille it's $50.

I also used my Toyota emblem, but plan on getting one of these...

I've used it on a grille before and it looks nice.

I have a post in my build thread on how I built mine...there are numerous ways, just depends on how deep you want to get. The only thing I do different is use zip tie holders on the inside instead of threaded rod I like I did on the first one. It's the way BFAD did his.

Brian, your thread was the one that pushed me over the edge to do it. Thanks.

I'll have to check that out as well.

I'll probably just buy a second grill in case I screw up. I was kind of thinking of a smaller emblem down in the corner too. Guess I can just look on ebay for something like that though.

I got my TRD emblem from Amazon.com

well I looked up BFAD's grill and like how he did it the second time around. A little more expensive (since the place he got the mesh from doesn't have anything extra for cheap right now) but I do like the pushed back look. It'll be a few more days before I push the "BUY IT NOW" button so I'll probably change my mind a few times between now and then.

Thanks for all the input guys! This will be the first "real" mod done so my knowledge is very "Limited". :thanks:

Yep, that's the one. That's a pic of the last grille I did, and the guy had ordered that emblem. I like the way it turned out, so I kept the part number. It's bigger than the 40s emblem, and it think it pops more.
The 1 review on the link I posted is a guy who says he used it for his Satoshi mod for his Tacoma!

ebay grill worked for me, details in my thread.

Ive been researching the threads on this mod as well. I just ordered this emblem from ebay. 69 70 71 72 73 Toyota FJ40 Front Grille Emblem 75321 60010 | eBay

Does anyone have the link to the BFAD thread? I couldnt find that username.
My idea was to epoxy allthread to the grill to bolt the mesh screen down. I need to find some heavy aluminum expanded metal now.

It's actually Big Fish All Day...check out this page and the few following, you'll see how he attaches his mesh.
I did my first one with threaded rod, and it didn't hold up well. I've since gone the route of zip tie mounts JB Welded to the inside of the grille and they hold up great.
As for the mesh, ya the stuff he used is expensive...check out the scratch and dent section. I use plater lathe mesh from Lowes. It's pretty sturdy, and I can get a 4'x8' roll for $8.

Yeah, it's the same place. I've looked there but I really don't want to pay $50 for twice of what I need. Haven't found anything in the scrap bin yet. I think I'll just do something cheaper for now and can always redo it later if I don't like it.

You can get the mesh from McMaster too. They have several styles/materials. That's where I got mine.
