As with the iPad mini in to dash I was bored so was looking for something to cut up...

Decided to have a crack at the 4runners front Grille.

Quick chop chop with the grinder and hack saw

Tape over the holes

Fiberglass tape onthe other side

Epoxy pasted on and cured

Bit of body bog to smooth down

Sand and sand then undercoat

Some nuts and bolts

Epoxy them around the sides

Paint the grille outer, cut the mesh to size and bolt it on..

Da daaa

You should get some letters like my 2nd gen has in the grille. It would look clean. Hard to think this was my 4runner. haha

Yeah I think that will be the go. I called in my local printers and they can cut acrylic if I take them in the exact design. Quoted $18 to cut out the letters for Toyota at 5cm high.... so going to have to work out the font or something...

Thanks for posting this. I have searched and searched for a grill shell like this for my 89 since I bought it. I am going to do the little red TRD letters on one side of the grille. Where did you order the mesh from?

Cheers bud, it was pretty easy to do all up! Although I kept having to remix the epoxy as kept letting it go off in the mix pot..

I got the mesh in local Aussie shop (SuperCheapAuto), I just jumped on their website and they have it on there so you should be able to find similar near you..

I was originally thinking about some perforated sheet but the cost would have gone up a fair bit unless you have a mate that can do for you... Something like on this blog...

Any more questions fire away.

Looks good.
I have a sheet of mesh & have been thinking of doing this same thing to my 89 when I get the motor in & running. I want as much air flow to the radiator as possible since I have the 3.0

I've got the 89 so it is a shiny silver grille. I assume it would be easier to buy a black one like yours form an earlier model so it holds paint better. Wonder if the earlier grill will fit the 89?

So this is what I went with for the letters....

Printed out TOYOTA on two bts of A4 and joined them together.

Taped the back to give it a bit of strength and then cut out the letters with a razor blade

Light bit of spray mount on the template to hold it in place on the radiator and then tape and paper everything else

Spray over with Heath proof white paint (Lightly so not to fill in the fins) and pull off all the tape/paper

Gillie back on and looks pretty ok I reckon!
