Absolutely. Drill away, one small hole there isnt going to structurally weaken the crossmember.

I'd drill it. Two small holes aren't going to do anything structurally to it. Just put something on the bare metal from the new holes.

Ok, just got off the phone with Roy at Savage and explained the issue. He is now look it for a local to him 5-speed to look at how to remedy this for the future. As for me I will be drilling to make it work.

PS he confirmed for me that there is no way to have the front plates all lined up and the rears lining up with them and to trying to put them in the wrong place.
