Scangauge II for trans temp?

Just wondering if anyone here uses the scangauge 2 and if they use it to monitor trans temps and how accurate it is. I'm considering buying one just so i can keep an eye on things. Thanks!

I run one in a 2000 and it's legit. As for accuracy I don't have anything to compare it to but I have no reason to believe its not 100%. It's all relative anyways right? Where in OR are you?

I have a scan gauge and a dedicated trans temp gauge. It consistently reads 40-50 degrees higher than the mechanical gauge. I know the sending unit is in the pan for the scan gauge, but I have my probe in the tranny cooler output line so it should be in the hottest fluid the tranny sees and its still way lower than the scan guage is reading.

This is obviously just my experience, maybe my sender isn't quite right. Either way I wouldn't rely solely on the scan gauge.

Oh, go ahead and rely solely on the scan gauge. 99% of 4runner out there don't have any temp gauge on their trannys and they are fine.

Don't spend $150 just to get the tranny temp unless you are a heavy tower and really need to watch the temps. If you want 4 gauges that you don't otherwise have, then get it, if not, then don't. Don't worry so much about accuracy, it's better than nothing, and pretty much no one actually has anything to compare to, so no one can give you a real accuracy figure.

Right, you establish a baseline by driving it normally and seeing what "normal" temps are. Then it is the variation from that baseline, not the actual temp that is important.

:couch2:

I use one for trans temp as well as other vitals. It seems to be quite accurate to me based upo "normal" operating temps and then when my OD Locks up or Unlocks. I'm usually at around 129'F. It does creep up fast when going up a hill and O/D locks. Going up the Adirondacks in New York and then the White Mountains in New Hampshire I could go from 110's and 120's to 160's and 180's in a matter of 10-20 seconds.

I would say it's accurate if you keep your eyes on it, figure out what's normal and then from there establish what isn't.

Can the SG II read trans temps on a 99? I got one for Christmas and love it, but don't know where it would even show this. Is it just a 2000 and newer thing that it shows trans temp?

Trans temp will work in a '99. Mine does. You have to put the code into the SG manually. There's a thread on codes for the SG around the forum somewhere.

Portland/Beaverton.

I wouldnt mind having it for the other features but after having a trans temp in my work truck(and i look at it all the time while driving) i kinda want to have one in the 4runner now too.

When I bought my SG for my Saturn as a mpg computer and gauge monitor I entered the extra gauges for the GM vehicles.

Since I had those addresses I sat in my car and started walking up the address locations and noting every address that looked promising and not like gibberish. It took 45min but I came up with two promising PID addresses. One acted like the trans temp and when I got home from work I pulled the connector and it went to fault.

If I had a non standard Toyota PID I could do the same thing. As long as the math is correct. Since its hex the math for other trans temps should work.

ScanGauge 2 Trans Temp

Definitely works. I used the first Trans temp pickup and not the "alt". Not sure which is more accurate or where which picks up from, but it's kicking out numbers, and I like numbers. I read where someone here was finding one more steady than the other. Need to compare with alt temp and a stand alone gauge (but that ain't happening)

Prior to B&M cooler I've seen my Trans temps match my coolant temps (+/-) on long hot days driving on the freeway, and spike to high 190's in stop & go, but quickly come down after some speed and air circulation.

Post B&M, Trans temp consistently 10-30 deg lower than coolant, and can just about match coolant in stop and go, but no major spikes.

I just Purchased one for $125 from auto anything. It's worth it to me as a single gauge let alone the other functions
