I just had the scariest experience of my life and it involved the 4runner so I figured I'd share. Remember, im 17 and we do stupid stuff like drive around aimlessly when we're bored, and I love my 4Runner so much that I do it often. So me and my friend, she is kinda an ex gf but not really were driving down a 50mph highway in 2 cars. Me in the 4runner, her in a 07 accord. We were moving pretty fast around 60 to 65 mph, but not racing, just crusing. And I head over a bride in the left lane, and she was in the right lane behind me. I look into my rear view mirror and I see a car make a turn from the shoulder into oncomming traffic. I thought a drunk driver was in the shoulder and made a U-turn into the oncomming cars, and I thought he hit my friend, which would have been death or paralysis. It was bad. So I am driving down the highway and call her, she is crying her eyes out and is saying " come get me". So I hung up and looked ahead for a street where I could make a U-Turn, there was no turn in sight so I drove into the median. I was on pure adrenaline so I must have hit that grass around 80-90 mph. Then I slammed the brakes and turned around in the grass and pulled out on the other side of the highway and tore it up. Easily over 100 on the way back up the bridge. I drove into the median as soon as the bridge ended and parked the car down in the medians ditch, I turned it off and took the keys. I ran across the highway and about a 1/4 mile up the shoulder until I got to her and the car. The car was in the right lane perpendicular to traffic. She was standing right next to the car! So I picked her up and moved her far away from the car and started asking what happened, it was clear she was in shock and crying so I wasnt going to get answers from her. I was about to call 911 until a ambulance pulls up. They were jerks and were telling me to get the car out of the road, I said I would have except I'm not putting my life in danger to pull a car in the middle of the lane into the shoulder, I'll get killed. And he says "it has to be moved". I told him to leave the ambulance in the lane for a roadblock and I'll move it, so thats what we did. Then a cop pulled up and I told him what happened and he talked to the girl. While all this was happening I was telling her friends where we were on the parkway. We were on our way to meet them so they came to meet us in the shoulder. They rolled up and one drove her in her car away and I went with my friend in his car. He had a civic so we obviously had to go to a street and make a U-Turn and come back. We get in sight of my 4runner and the thing looks completely wrecked. The car is at pretty much a 45 degree angle, well off the shoulder and in the grass. It looks like adrunk driver just fell asleep and drove it into a ditch, 2 cop cars are surrounding it both of them talking. I get out and one of the cops was the guy who came to her car earlier and told the other one that it was mine and I was helping the girl on the other side. The other officer handed me my liscense which was in the car and told me everythings ok he just wanted to know why there was an empty car grounded into the median. I literally almost fell out of the car when I sat down it was tilted so much. So after thinking about what happened, I think she was texting and she drifted into the shoulder. She corrected it by oversteering to the left, but the shoulder was all gravel and broken glass so she slid into oncomming traffic. Make sure you tell your kids to only text at red lights and stop signs. They are going to text and drive, but tell them this story to let them know how disastrous it can be. But I'm sharing this on here because the 4Runner really is a beast. There is no other car where I can just be driving on the highway at 80mph and just drive off into the median, make the turn and pull out on the other side and still accelerate fast enough to not get hit, and then cross over a bridge and drive it right into a ditch. It really made it alot easier for me to get to her faster and safer.

Your friend is just plain dumb. Even if she was in a serious accident, the fact that she was texting means she shouldn't receive any sympathy from anyone or try to hold a pitty party for herself.

How did you pull away from her on the bridge originally. I thought you were cruising together then all of a sudden she dissappeared or you sped off?

Honestly my brain hurts. Hooked on phonics has some replay value - try it out as it didn't work the first time. In particular the section on run-on sentences and paragraph breaks.

The girl was texting and lost control of her car? It sounds like no one was hurt, which is good. I hope this is a good example for people to learn from. She was just as likely to loose control into a school bus full of kids and possible kill them all.

My 4Runner is perfectly fine, which is one of my points of the story. Not many other SUV's can handle what the 4Runner did. Her car is not wrecked. An ambulance came and blocked the road so I could safely move the car out of the road and into the shoulder.

I am not trying to get sympathy for her texting. I am fully aware that it was incredibly stupid. I don't know what part of what I said implied I want sympathy. All I said was if you have kids, tell them this story to deter them from texting while on highways. You'd be surprised how many teenagers do it.

I don't know what you mean by " pulled away from her." We were both cruising over a bridge. She was behind me. I randomly looked into my rearview mirror and saw a car make a 180 degree turn. I saw it swerve into the shoulder and then turn facing into the traffic.Headlights facing the on-comming cars, and brake lights facing me. She was the wrong direction.

I called her while still continuing driving away from her car for another 1/2 mile or so. Then I drove into the grass on my left when she told me there was a problem. There is no curb. It is a deep ditch of grass separating the 2 directions of traffic on that highway. I drove into the grassy median, and popped out on the other side heading towards her. Then I drove until I saw her car. Then, I drove into the median again and ran across the highway over to her. Do you understand? I made a circuit basically. Started when I saw her spin out, drove for 1/2 mile. Drove into median. Got on the highway again going to opposite direction. Drove into median again. Ran across the street to her. I don't know how to make it any simpler.

But I'm sharing this on here because the 4Runner really is a beast. ....that part is actually hilarious, you really saved the absolute best for last. LOL, why cant any sedan drive on the grass? you said there was no curb so what would stop a sedan from driving over a grassy median?

Haha well with the civic part, it's hard to explain but it isn't just a level patch of grass. It's literally about 50-75 feet of grass that creates a V shape, with probably 5-6 foot tall weeds at the bottom of the V. It really is offroading. If a sedan were to go down off the road, they would slide down and crash in the bottom of it. It is also to steep for them to pull back up to the road on the other side. That's why I said you need an offroading SUV.

My 4Runner looked like it was a drunk driving accident. I ran the thing off the road, slammed the brakes, and parked it all in a few seconds. There was no prettiness, or neatness about it. It wasn't like I went to the shoulder and parked it nicely. The 4Runner was slightly pointed away from the road. Not 100 percent parallel, and it looked like it was at a 45 degree angle . Driver side doors angled down towards the ditch, passenger doors angled up towards the street. The cop was inspecting it because it looked like somebody fell asleep at the wheel and drove it offroad into the grassy pit. It was nighttime so to all other drivers, it did not look like someone safely pulled it into that spot. And it was on the left, most people pull into the right shoulder when they have a problem.

And I meant to say that when I sat back in the car when it was time to leave, I almost fell out of it because of gravity. If you're getting in a car and the driver side is facing the bottom of this grass valley/pit whatever you want to call it, you will fall out unless you grab on to something and close the door right away. I think I just put my foot on the running board to support me and then closed my door.

She is actually a pretty good driver. I have driven with her enough times to know that she wouldn't just drift off the road. I would put my money down that she was texting. She does alot of texting while driving.

So yes, take advice from a 17 year old. Kids are stupid and will text when driving and theres nothing you can do about it. But make sure you explain to them what exactly can happen when they're doing it on the highways. My best friend could have died because she was a complete idiot, don't let it happen to your kids please.

I still don't get this? If the car was at such an angle that you almost fell out, wouldn't opening the door just put it right into the ground? How did you get in the car?

I stopped reading after you said how old you are.

I wouldn't be so harsh on the kid - I also had a near death experience in a vehicle when I was driving at the age of 16 and was pretty shaken up by it at the time. Fortunately I learned from my mistake and I've been able to reach a ripe old age Hopefully swiss will do the same and learn from his friend's experience.

and at 17 no matter what car you have...you should not be driving 80mph or doing u-turns on a freeway or approaching bridges at 100+

Yup, your second replay of the events is much more understandable. I am glad that no one got hurt. Thanks for sharing the terrifying story with us. I hope that your ex-GF learned her lesson as well.

Holy crap, I don't even know where to begin. As someone else pointed out, the story was almost incomprehensible. Some paragraph breaks would have been lovely. :bigok:

So you looked in your rear-view mirror.
Some person flipped a u-turn, BUT stayed on same side of highway?
That person hit your ex-gf's (but not really your ex-gf) vehicle.

So you flip a u-turn (crossing media) yourself to go back.
You drive recklessly to get back to scene of accident.
You cross the median (again) while flipping another u-turn.
You park the 4Runner in center median, and run across all lanes and up an offramp?

I think I got it. Sounds like there are many morals to the story. Glad to hear everyone is ok.
