Scary stuff growing in ashtray?

Does anyone have a clue what this stuff might be? I bought an extremely well maintained 3rd gen over the weekend and just discovered this crap in the ashtray. It smells like oil but sort of sweet, is red in color, and has little balls. I felt one of the balls with latex gloves and it was semi-hard - didn't dare squeeze hard enough to find out what was inside for fear of it penetrating my gloves.

I flushed it out with the hose, doused it with surface cleaner, and shot it with more water. The tray seems to be okay; hopefully I am too (the oily smell is definitely noticeable).

Pics and description might be that an air freshener may have spilled or been dumped in there. I've seen DIY ones made from little porous plastic balls soaked in sented oils. Kinda like the ones with the bottle of oil at the bottom with a bunch of sticks to wick and defuse the stink.
