School Engineering Project

Make sure (on the back or something) you sign it, date it and write some quick sentence on context, like "Was talking to guys on T4R.org about cup holder for my HS class." If you don't, 10 years from now you will never remember what it was about of for.
Initial concept sketches can be wildly different from actual production pieces, so different they might not even look like the same thing. Ask me how I know lol.

Last point: If you describe something with words, it can be imagined by the reader in many different ways. With a sketch, it can only be imagined one way, and that's the engineer who drew its way!

Very good! Concept is sound. Besides "pinning" the attachments to the mounting plate what other ideas do you have that could secure the different attachments?

Next step will be (still in sketch mode) a 3 view (top, front, side) sketch of both the mounting plate and attachments.

In the real world, you would need to be prepared to answer and defend any questions or criticisms like "What about the passenger left knee?" or "The console won't be strong enough to handle the overhanging load of two full cups + the weight of the attachment." "What are you going to do to strengthen the console mount?"

Always make sure you think of every single thing that can be asked and have an answer for it. #idiotproof
 
I like the location because it works with the 5 spd and auto.

How are you going to secure the cup? Memory foam comes to mind for a quick deal but spring loaded arms work well when paired with a solid base (unlike toyota OEM pre 98)

Just watch out for how far to the side the 4wd shifter slides out. I have never stopped to actually look and see whether it goes outside of the console or not.

I've been thinking about other ways to attach the cup holder to bracket. With the weight of the two full cups being pretty heavy thats why I thought about the slide in bracket. It would allow some of the wieght to be transfered throughout the bracket instead of just having all the weight on the very edge, which would then pull the console. Also, it would make it easy to remove and place a different attachment in, like a storage bin or etc. Like you said, there is many different things I have to think about. Just thought it would be good to get a quick sketch out, so people could visualize what I'm thinking.

I dont have a 4 wheel drive so i'll have to look for a picture and make sure everything will work.

How far along in math are you? Have you started any simple beam moment or loading diagrams yet? If not, that's OK. Do you know what a gusset is? If so, you might want to think about using them some way to support your overhanging load of two full drinks.

I passed the AB calc test last year, and I'm currently in AP physics this year but I also took Honors Physics last year and had a 96% all year. Yes, I'm fimilar with a gusset. I'll look into that.
 
Wow, when i was a senior in high school i was still preoccupied with goofing off and chasing tail. You have a bright future ahead, my friend.

No it was not meant to be condescending at all but, as you both know, if you become engineers you will automatically turn into assho!es to the rest of the world.

Looks like a cool design, I'm excited to see where you go with it! Definitely look into the amount of weight you'll be putting on the bracket like 1engineer said. Look behind your center console to see what you can attach it to. Maybe the plastic is strong enough, or maybe there is a metal bracket right there that it can be attached to.

Here's a few more designs. I was trying to show how the pin systems and support will work. The gusset will lean up against the carpet that runs up to the center console, this is so that when the cups are full all the downward force on the right side will push the left side into the carpet instead of onto the bracket were this isn't much support.


Here is what I mean by the floor coming up to the center console. The bracket will be attached the center console and the gusset will rest up against the floor which is sloping down.



**Please remember none of this is to scale yet. Of course the design will be changing. Only the 2nd day working on this project.

Even though its a pain and boring to write stuff down that is what makes the difference between a so so engineer and a damn good engineer. That, plus it is CYA help later on when manufacturing starts!

All the designs are being drawn in my engineering notebook so I will never lose them. It's funny you mention teacher cause my mom is actually my engineering teacher this year lol. But I have had engineering in the past and we have thoroughly gone over the design process.
