Scramble's '99 Limited Dog Hauler:

You can do amazing things with Vice grips! They're one of my favorite tools. I have a set of pre- Irwin, made in the good ol' USA, legit Vice Grip brand that I won in shop class in the early 90's, I cherish those things.

I also love Anti Sieze. I have a big can of that, I NEVER start a job without having it on hand. Damn near EVERYTHING gets coated with that stuff during reassembly.

Can't call it a dog hauler without pics of the pups.
I took Melissa our 9 year old mutt to the vet this morning for a check up.
I wasn't worried about her scratching the leather. She sits in one spot or lays down. She a little lady. My other two psychos have to stay in the cargo area with a pet barrier.

I've been DD this rig to work every day, it's been great so far. My last 4 tank fulls have been 17.666 - 17.83 - 17.5 & 19.23 mpg. The last one might be an anomaly but there was no rain or snow that week so no AWD or 4WD was used & I did drive closer to 60-65 instead of my usual 65-70mph.

I only received one key & no fobs when I bought this. I didn't want to go any longer without back up keys. I decided against buying fobs since I'm going to get remote start installed & that comes with it's own remote to start, lock & unlock the doors.

Ebay is your friend over Amazon for key prices. I picked up 2 new after market Transponder keys with the Toyota Logo & one OEM valet key.
I'll keep the original OEM chipped key locked away & use the 2 new chipped keys for DD & a backup for my GF. Getting new keys at the dealer can be expensive so I had them cut for $2.50 ea at the hardware store & programed them myself.

Here are the instructions I used from infamousRNR programing the two transponder keys:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...onder-keys-chip-keys-oem-toyota-ignition.html

Programming your transponder key for OEM Toyota security keys.

Step 1: Cut your blank key

Step 2: Press and release the the GAS and BRAKE peddle simultaneously (at the same time) . . . . ****do this without the key in the ignition

Step 3: Insert the working (master) key into the ignition and press the GAS pedal 5 times within 15 seconds of inserting the key into the ignition

Step 4: (With the key still in the ignition) Press the BRAKE peddle 6 times. Do this within 20 seconds of completing step 3. Then remove the master key (the working key)

Step 5: Insert the new key and press the GAS peddle once.

Step 6: Wait for the security light that blinks to stop blinking (could take up to 2 minutes... took approximately 20 seconds until mine stop blinking.

Step 7: As soon as the red security light stops blinking remove the NEW key and press the brake peddle once

I got a flashing CEL coming home from work the other night. She ran fine from my job to the highway at 30-40mph but when entering the highway the engine started vibrating pretty bad at 50mph. I drove under 50 for a while & then tried to force it. Once I got up to 60 the vibrating stopped & I was cruising at 70 nicely. When I got off the HWY to get to my house, I was getting a flashing CEL on acceleration from a stop sign or red light along with the engine vibration. I had to keep letting off the gas & then get back on it. My GF bought me an Ancel AD310 Classic code reader for Christmas & it showed a P0306, misfire on Cyl #6. I'm gonna do plug & wires tomorrow but my gut feeling tells me it's the injector.

If wires and plugs have never been done then it could be that causing the issue. Hopefully it's a simple and cheap solution like that.

New Toyota keys feel good don't they?

I wish I had seen the portion of your thread that mentioned DIY transponder key programming before I had one programmed at the dealer. Dammit! :redbrick:

Good to know for future reference though - and at least I didn't fall for the dealer scam when it came to keyless remotes.

Yes they do & it might sound stupid also but I bought a bunch of really nice Toyota key chains off eBay. For both trucks & their backup keys. :high5:

I did the wires & plugs today. Ran great when cold, when I took her around the block the CEL came on & she ran a little rough. At least it wasn't a blinking CEL & I didn't have a violent vibration like the other night. So it was definitely time for plugs, they looked pretty done when I pulled them out. I still have a P0306 on cyl# 6, I'm ordering a Denso coil from Amazon. Only one of the 3 coils was Toyota. Looks like the PO went cheap with aftermarket. I'm surprised because he had it serviced at the dealer. The plugs were the correct NGK's. If that doesn't do it I'll replace the injector.

Do a double dose of the Techron or the new Gummout injector cleaner. You have nothing to loose.

The Cataclean is also a good cleaner.

My old '97 did the same thing one time... plugs/wires fixed her right up. I would try moving that coil and see if the misfire code follows.

I put Lucas fuel injector cleaner in yesterday.

Good idea, I should have thought of that yesterday.

I have my rear seats folded down. The whole back is a puppy play pen.

Toys, blankets........

haha that's funny, I keep the back seats up with a pet barrier. I dont like when they stand on the center console or the rear door arm rests, their claws scratch everything.

There's a few threads on this subject. Also when you read the key reviews on Amazon a few guys posted the DIY instructions. What did they charge you? My old 01 Honda was $60 for one key but my GF's newer 04 Outback was $180. I'm never paying those prices again.

I'll be honest and say I'm not a Lucas fan. And if the bottle cost less than 10 dollars to treat 20 gal of fuel to me it doesn't have the good stuff in it.

I also put 4oz of acetone in on darn near every fill up.

$150 for a key + programming. Never again.

220,000 Miles.

She's fixed & running great. I just hit the 220,000 mile marker too.

I had my cylinders mixed up when going from memory. I thought the PS was 1, 2 & 3 & DS was 4, 5, & 6. It's actually PS - 1, 3 & 5 and the DS is 2, 4 & 6. I thought I was checking the plug on cylinder # 3 but I was actually checking cyl # 5. LOL When I pulled the coil & plug from cyl # 3 they were covered with oil. The spark plug was very loose & had oil creeping up the threads. I find it strange that I was still getting a misfire on cyl # 6 when it was actually cyl # 3 that was the problem. I have a nice new Denso coil now that wasn't needed.

Coil & plug saturated in oil.

Plug, wires & part#'s for anyone who needs them.

All six old plugs were toast. I did gap the new ones to .44.

Two aftermarket & one Toyota coil. All working fine. I also tightened all of the valve cover bolts.

Pulled this mouse nest out from under the intake. It was well hidden, old & a little burnt so it must have been there from the previous owner. I've been parking outside & DD almost everyday so they wouldn't have moved in on me.

With the wasted (shared) spark on the 5VZ, you could have ignition problems on the 'opposite' plug reported than where the issue actually happened. Both spark plugs fire each time one of the coils is fired.

Sounds like the spark was getting partially absorbed under the #3/6 coil and less of it made it to #6 through the wire than directly to cylinder 3.

Yea, I figured it was something like that.

Hey all,
Just stopping in to say hi. Not much to report on this rig besides oil changes & the 17" 4th Gen Sport wheels with Grabber HTR's I threw on her last Summer. 265/70/R17
(Pics below) Those are the wheels & tires I had on my 3RZ back in 2014 before the lift. They were laying around doing nothing so I felt like changing it up from the stock 5 stars. No rubbing with 99 Talls. Been daily driving her since last fall and all I can say is that this truck is amazing. Not one issue what so ever. I've put 16K on her the year & a half I've owned her & now's she's at 233K. I accumulated some parts last year & hope to get them on before the Fall this year. New brakes front & rear, OEM LBJ's, very lightly used OME 906's & I'm gonna use my old 99 talls from my 3RZ for the front because they only had 143K on them when I took them off. I also picked up new KYB's for the front & rear from the classifieds here for a used price.
