SD Map card update

Picked up map card number 86271-35021 and it updates the map to version 05-38-50 and map date of 2018-05-0

Had map card 86271-35020 and it was version 05-37-53 and date of 2018-03-3

It is also states it is 2018 - 2019 Ver.1 by HERE

It seems this is the one you want if you want to update your GPS.

Ive seen them on ebay and amazon.

do a search on ebay for "86271-35021"

make sure to check the feedback percent of the seller.

new cards run from $80 to $140.

there is someone on there selling them from New York for $49.99 and has a feedback rating of 64% and I would avoid that.

I'm wondering if some of those ebay sellers are mechanics from the dealers selling the old cards after they do an update on some customers car???
At this moment there are 2 and the cheapest is $80 for a pre-owned card. The money is not the issue, its trusting the seller.

So GraySquirrel, do you have plans for your old card? hint hint....

Actually - I have learned the hard way to keep your old card as a back up incase the new card fails.

I fell for one crook who sold me a card for $49.99. It failed after two months. So, I had to pop back in the old card and my GPS worked fine.

My father-in-law has a 2015 Tundra so I have also given him my old card too.

One seller that I talked too said he worked for a company that prepped cars for sale overseas. They would pull out the map cards because a North America map card did not work in Europe -- then the company would sell the cards for extra income.

The other couples that I have dealt with I think worked for dealers and were selling old stock that didn't sell and the new stuff came in and they were trying to clear out the shelves.

Like I said, make sure you check the feedback of the seller and make sure they are truthful.

If that seller on the $80 buck card is from Orlando, Florida -- he's the one I got mine from and so far it works.

Aren't these standard format SD cards that can be duplicated on a PC in case the one you are using fails?

Maybe the VIN is the encryption key. But I would think that for one that works in your car you could duplicate it and be able to use it in the same car if the first fails.

I don't understand why bother with these SD cards at all. For the cost of one upgrade, you can get a Garmin GPS with life update and much better feature and GPS function than the head unit. Personally I don't like taking my eyes away from the road to look at the head unit screen. It is too low in my opinion. You can put a Garmin on the dash or fix it to the wind shield. Works a lot better.

It seems like we could just disk-dump the card and dump it back to another card to copy it.
I haven't tried it because mine is already a few years old, so not very worth while.

For both wife's and my Toyota's, GPS works fine once we set up defaults to our liking. That said, I use a Garmin for work travel. Much better unit; faster, easier to read and set-up. IMO, Toyota's version is clear example of trying to make something better that didn't need it.

I've tried that but the SD card is keyed somehow. Haven't done much more than a simple dump/copy but I know putting it on a standard SD card doesn't work.

my understanding of this copy is as he stated the mem chip requires an odd ball format .. so he had some hack ware to format this micro chip .

I'm glad you tried. That's too bad they have to make it so expensive to keep your maps updated when your phone always has up-to-date maps.

Oh, and to be specific, I did a linux DD bit copy of the whole thing raw. So if it was a strange format, it should have worked. SD cards contain firmware that usually just guard against data loss. I think, in this case, there is some kind of custom firmware hook that guards against copy protection.

When I have some time...
