Seat Memory, can i have them!!!!

What is the part number...I try and see if I can hunt a used one down.

Also, just want to make sure I understand the schematic of the system. There are basically four parts of the system. Memory Buttons (1, 2 & SET), Switch controls (buttons that move the seat), the ECM (computer that retains the seat positions) and the motors (that physically move the seat).

Connection wise, it would be Switch controls connect to the ECM that connects to the motors. The Memory Buttons connect to the ECM. Correct?

The switch and ECM are combined in the same part. The switch relays the information to the ECM. The Memory button is just a simple switch that is relayed to the ECM. The ECM sends + or - 12V to the motor(s) for a certain amount of time based on the seat position.
 
The mem v. non mem is a very different circuit. I'm certain that replacing the seat position switch and wiring harness you will be most of the way home. You will then need the door mounted memory buttons. I read that the door mount communicates via infrared to the switch. That's nuts, but if it's true you have 1 less issue.

Remaining issue: How to connect this (now w/mem) seat to the suv (not expecting mem). I'm worried that it won't get the right feedback and throw an error. If it can ignore it then your golden. You will likely need to create a conversion pig tail, or figure out what wiring harness comes from the suv side and buy/make the mem version. Best case here is that you just convert the pins from the new mem seat to the old suv non mem which should be easy...there are not many pins with non mem.

Worse case: the mem seat communicates via the connection back to the suv...then you def need that harness hooked up.

I'd say you have an excellent chance at making this work.

I'm going to have to make a conversion harness. There is no door switch. The memory buttons are on the dash. It's just wire from the buttons to the switch. I know the information about the infrared signal you are referring to. I believe this is either a mistake, or this takes place inside the switch assembly.
 
I have a seat switch out of my old 2000 Lexus GS 300...it just has buttons for position 1, position 2, and SET.

It looks to be part # 918-4K02...would this help you?

I want this in my 04 but I see a couple of problems to solve.

1. Sourcing parts
a. 2006-2009 Driver power/memory seat (includes ECU & switch) - Salvage yard
b. 2006-2009 speedo cluster trim (has cut-out for 1,2,set switch) - Salvage yard
c. Memory seat 1,2,set switch - Salvage yard
d. wiring harness - Unknown

2. Problems
a. - Wiring harness - will need to study diagrams to see if this was a separate harness or (more likely) just additional connectors on an existing harness (i.e. I might have to make my own for an 04 installation).
b. - The only power/memory seats I've seen were in Limited trim (i.e. leather). The 04 SR5 has cloth. Will an 04 cloth seat cover fit on these seats? Alternatively, I would need to re-cover the other seats in leather ($).
c. - The only power/memory seats I've seen include side airbags. My 04 SR5 did not have side airbags. Can the airbag be removed, disabled or integrated into the 04 system?
 
I looked into this as well. I think for the 06-09 its possible to do a little easier but will still be pretty expensive. The cost is around $500 for the limited seat switch and the dash memory button. My guess is the wiring for the memory button is already there, but I haven't taken apart the dash to look.

It's too bad it's just single seat memory and not as sophisticated as the Lexus memory system, otherwise it would help justify the cost. On the Lexus you have 3 position memory for both driver and passenger for the seat, right and left mirrors, and included a reverse tilt feature for the mirrors. On the 4Runner with only seat memory its sort of an afterthought feature because you still need to adjust the mirrors.

It would be nice to have but for me it's not quite worth the cost unless I can find the parts used.
 
Wanted to give this thread a bump see if there was any news or was this a dead end? Would love to put this in so I can stop having to adjust everything when my wife gets in the car, its a hassle!
 
OK so, just to have the theoretical parts needed to complete this mod is about $500 (not confirmed).

Just wanted to bump this thread to see maybe some people can chime in.

Once a solution exist, the people who contributed money upfront will get it for cheaper?

Apart from the switch, we would need pin-outs (schematics, etc). If it were relatively cheap (no more than $500), it would be worth it to me. My wife is 5'0" and getting into the Runner is a pain. Too bad there isn't an aftermarket solution.

looks like some very good research has been done. i saw a post (too lazy to find it) mentioning that the ECU sends 12v to the motors for a time interval based on seat location. i'm curious if that means the motors are timed to place them into position, or if there are actual position indicators back to the ECU.

engineer by trade, i could throw some time to this to see what we can get working. i have an 05 v8 and would love this. there are always other options than stock ECU. i would bet we could create a controller to handle this. it would be great if there are position indicators already wired up.

The ECU would only have to remember the two "saved" locations, and the "current" location. Then, when asked to return, it would know how many pulses to apply to each motor, and in which direction in order to get
back to the stored state.

If you have the time and the interest in checking out the motors on the seat, maybe you can tell if they are stepper motors. If they are, then I think we've solved the design issue. All we would need is a controller that keeps track of the pulses sent
to the motors.

Also, this would be consistent with the idea that the adjustment switches for the seat go to the controller unit first, and not directly to the seat motors.

If there were sensors on the seat so that the controller could read the seat's position, then you wouldn't NEED to have the switches go through the ECU (although you still COULD have them run that way), but the switches could simply control the motor, and the ECU could read the position location of each adjustment axis on the seat to determine where it the seat currently is and where it needs to be.

BUT... if you used stepper motors to control each motor, then all input would have to go through the ECU, so that the ECU could send pulses to the step motors,
and keep track of exactly e the seat is based on the number of pulses sent and the direction of those pulses. So this design would at least be consistent with what we know so far about the memory seats... namely the the memory seats use a different switch where the seat switch inputs go directly into an ECU.


I could envision a nice prototype built out of an Arduino board to prove that the concept works, and to easily check out and calibrate a solution.

Anyone who has an oscilloscope, might be able to tap into one of the motor wires of a seat with memory to see if motors are receiving pulses when the seat
motors are running. (I only had access to those tools more than 20 years ago in school... for all I know, maybe there are USB-based oscilloscope like readers that are cheap and use a PC to handle all of the plotting and displays).

If it worked, I have no current idea how a Arduino prototype would move from prototype stage to a true production run of product.
Maybe it would be based off some commercially available programable stepper motor ASIC.

I have good training, but I was always a software guy, so I've never had any professional experience producing hardware production, and the few circuits that I've tried to design for my hobbies have always frustrated me (not to say that I didn't get at least *some* of them to work eventually!).

College was a long time ago, and since I don't design circuits for a living the few times that I've decided to give it a try on a hobby, I've always been frustrated by issues, because I'm rusty and don't have recent hands-on experience so it takes me too long... not that I won't try. For example, I recently built a prototype pulse-width-modulator in order to provide digital speed control to my boat's electric trolling motor. That was a fun project!

Interesting read. I can't help as mine do not have memory seats. From what you are saying, if we can determine what type of motor the seat uses, then maybe all we would need are some parts and NOT an ECU? In other words, just get together some parts from Toyota (no ECU) and plug in. I think a while back the cost amounted close to $1K which is bonkers. I would love to get them, but it's really looking like it's a major pain.

so much of this made me smile. god i hope they're stepper motors thats so much easier. i've been doing controls too long(not really); already tried to over-complicate this.

i've got a busy sept (weddings, work, ugh) but i'll see what i can come up with in terms of answers to some needed info (motor type, where the switch signals go). we'll go from there. :tea:
