Seat Memory, can i have them!!!!

Looks like the ECU manages the pulse width modulation via two wire lines to each motor without switches at the end of the seat rails.

From the FSM:

When the power seat control switch is operated, a command signal is sent to the memory seat ECU and switch. The memory seat ECU and switch then activates the appropriate seat motor as needed. This memory system does not use a seat position sensor. The seat position is detected by counting pulses that are output when the motor turns. If there is no pulse output from the motor, the motor will stop operating. The memory seat ECU and switch is designed so that a malfunction of the seat memory system will not interfere with manual seat control. The seat memory switch also sends signals to the memory seat ECU and switch to memorize a given seat position. Two seat positions can be memorized. The seat memory switch is later used to send signals to the memory seat ECU and switch to return to one of the memorized positions.

Not sure it's worth the hassle though... I like my manual seats better to be honest.

That's the problem with Engineers... We're always trying to *solve* the problem our selves!!! It's in our nature, and reinforced by our training.

That's why it's really true that your A students become engineers and the worker bees, your B students become middle managers, and your C students become the top bosses and executives.

The C students learned to relax, hang out, and find the answers without doing the work... by copying, by befriending someone very smart, by finding someone else who knows the answer.... Anything, as long as *THEY* don't have to do the work themselves. That makes them a perfect boss. While each engineer is engrossed in solving each problem themselves, the C student takes 5 middle managers and tasks them with finding out what's been done, takes 20 engineers, points each one at different problem, and really gets things done!

at least i already called myself out on overthinking.

i presume this FSM snippet describes how the factory memory seats work? the non-memory electric seats dont also have an ECU, right? (i think i read this in the thread here somewhere, just want to confirm).

i can't imagine its there for non-mem seats. i wonder if there is something else performing the PWM translation from the switches? i doubt they directly control the motors. unless i missed something, i feel there's still opportunity for those of us wo memory seats.

not that paul even cares anymore!!!:p

Piff you don't even wanna guess my grades, I didn't care for school too boring most of the time.

Nothing wrong with over thinking it, I've just learned to do this:

*Spends hours overdesiging/overthinking a solution*
*Stops and looks at desk*
*Realizes solution already exists in simpler fashion, laughs at self.*

That's for the memory seats, the factory units I don't believe use an ECM (I didn't look to be honest.)

So it's probably just apply positive current, and is using Pulse width modulation, and counting the pulses.

No need for a stepper motor. If you keep track of the number of pulses and direction, if you reverse those steps the seats will be "close enough" to the memorized position. Although there could be some error, 100% precision isn't required.

My guess is that you probably apply + to one wire to move in one direction, and + to the other to move in the opposite direction. Of course, they could always apply + and - and just reverse the polarity to determine the direction.

I've seen motors and circuits wired both ways...

We'd need to confirm this operation (on the non-memory seats would be fine)... then, if you were interested, you could work on a PWM controller that handles this logic. An Arduino board driving some MOSFET high out Transistors would be an ideal prototype. I've purchased some very high power mosfet transistors for only a few bucks each.

Going from prototype to production... that's beyond me. I'm really a software guy, not a hardware guy! But, if the prototype worked, then you would have proof of concept, plus all of the prototype logic would be in software (read... cheap and really easy to modify).

I guess a production version might use some type of programmable micro-controller.

hello, im actually debating myself over limited vs sport edition on this one.

I love the scoop and i really like the seats on the sport edition, and i prefer cloth since here its hot anytime anywhere , so no need for heated seats , and well leather can get hot ...

My wife and i will be sharing the car, so i think it will be nice to have memory seats.
we drove a 2009 tahoe without memory and boy... haha before leaving any place was around 2 minutes of seat adjusting terapy haha
 
this is still on my list of fun projects to tackle, but is fairly low priority at the moment. i spent the last 6 months mostly travelling for work, behind on lots of things. in the middle of the 5th gen brake upgrade, body work fix from an accident this winter. dual battery setup and suspension is on deck for this summer.

i'm keeping an eye on this and will report if i ever start anything. sorry to be non-committal.

I am, however willing to kibitz and kick around ideas.

I've been "working on" (read... mostly thinking about) a pulse width modulator solution to add variable speed control to my electric trolling motor. I built a hardware prototype that worked well, but I dream of using my arduino board so that I can put the logic in software. Then I can add fun features like a "soft start", or maybe make it so that a double tap on the foot switch locks the unit on full speed, and another double tap puts it back to variable.

Anyway, I know I won't have time to work on the motor part or wiring for a mosfet power amp, but if anyone is committed to working on that part, I'd be happy to work on some code for the electronic brains in the form of an arduino.

The inputs to the arduino can't be higher than 5v, and the output is +5V, but very low current, so you would need a mosfet power transistor to drive the motors, but the arduino could produce a pulse-width modulation signal.

For the memory aspect, I guess we'd have to look at flash memory. I'm not sure if the arduino can store state in it's own flash, but if anyone wants to take on the wiring and motor part, I'd be willing to take on the software and memory storage aspect.

Doesn't look like it. Additionally, with the part already listed, the bill would've been over $1K. I don't think anyone tackled it. The rest of us are waiting for a canary.

Yeah I was afraid of that. Oh well it would be nice to have but something I can live without since it wouldn't be low cost.
