Seat Swaps

Has anyone done a seat swap? I saw an old thread either here or on one of the other forums at one point, but there wasn't much on there. The factory seats, at least my worn out 193K mile seats are terrible. I'm gonna keep my eye on CL for a decent set of seats out of something that might fit without a ridiculous amount of fab work, but I'm wondering what other people have already made work. I think one guy used Range Rover seats and they looked awesome, but they aren't gonna come cheap.

I completely refurbed my drivers seat with new leather and new seat foams. $550 like new. I figure if I plan on spending hours and hours sitting in that spot at least I can be comfortable.

It really depends on how much you can spend on it.

I can't stomach that on something that I really bought as a toy. I bet it looks and feels awesome, though. I'm more looking for a set of seats out of a 3 series, RX8, Scion....something I can make fit without spending a million dollars. This thing has already been nickle and diming me to death :crybaby:

I took heated powered seats out of a 01 limited and swapped in my 97. It all bolts in if you can do some wiring. Now I got heat powered seats! And the seats gets pretty toasty.

That is definitely the easiest option, and something I will keep an eye out for. So far the only seats I have seen specifically for 4runner are at salvage yards and they want an arm and a leg for them. I might just go cruise through the salvage yard tomorrow to see what they have laying around.

;) if you need any pics, i can take em for you.

Yours looks amazing! I found a set over here, but I can't remember the price. I'm really looking for someone who just wants a set of seats out of their garage for $200 or less. The RR seats look like they belonged in there from the start. Very nicely done.

Bought a rolled 98 with a good interior. Had to use my frames because they were electric. Removed the fabric from the seat backs and put them on mine. swapped the lower cushions. swapped the carpet and rear seats also. Got a bunch of little parts also. now I have a running engine and transmission I am trying to sell or find one with a blown engine to swap out.

i got a set of seats off ebay for inexpensive.
think "type-r racing seats" lol

they are the most ridiculous seats for a 4runner ever but damn are they comfortable.

like I said... how much $ you want to spend. I take my toy on a 14 day road trip each year to someplace where we can drive off road and camp. so for me it's not just a toy it's my house on wheels for 14 days. doing an average of 300 miles each day, and sitting there @ least 5-6 hours so... having old worn out seats was a major pain.

If your going to own a 20 year old 4wd truck your going to spend some $ on it. no way around it.

There’s a lot of different seats you can use. Really depends how much work you wanna put into it. Junkyards are full of newer cars with decent seats. Just measure the seat track and find some that are real close or exact. Grind off your mounting feet and weld onto new seat tracks. I put some new Xterra seats in my 90 pickup, with modified bracket to match seat track and in my 02 runner there are now LandRover seats, that was pretty easy. The LandRover seats can be found at most salvage yards as well in pretty good shape.
I replaced mine not because they were worn out, but because they were too small and uncomfortable. The LR seats are great for taller broader people...

what type of modifications did you have to do to make them work? i have gray interior. i wonder if they come in gray. what year LR?

They come in grey, I've seen em...
The seat tracks are almost exactly the same width...
I just grind off the feet and weld on the feet from the yota seats...

Mine were from a discovery 2...like 94-00 I think
Pm me if you find some and want some more info and pics

Those look awesome! I'm gonna have to start looking around teh salvage yards or hope for a CL ad with someone just looking to clear out their garage like I said. The stock seats are awful, especially with 21 years of wear and tear on them.

Trust me, I'm aware of the costs. Although I'm only about $6400 into so far and almost all of the little maintenance items are taken care of. I have my truck for long hauls, and if I ever get a chance to actually do some overlanding as I would like, I am sure that I will be more willing to spend a pretty penny on some new seats. These things suck. However, the guy below who spent $40 on those awesome Land Rover seats is what I am looking for lol.

Ha! I can't believe how cheap those are! I might go that route. $200 for brand new seats. Can't beat that. How easy was it to mount them up? Lot of fab work?
