Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure on V8's! Important!

@slyfox75

I started getting the lights on my dash last winter. I reset the battery cable a few times then after the weather warmed up I didn't see the lights come back till the first cold weather crank a few weeks ago. I did some research on here and noticed slyfox75 lived about an hour way. I sent him a pm one evening, he called me the next morning. We discussed. He gave me an education on the issue. That evening, he was gracious enough to help me install it. Top notch guy! My vehicle hasn't thrown the code yet. I'm glad I found his kit before the issue became worse.

I've got the problem now too.....

@119,800 miles, my 05 just started with this issue. Question - It was very loud when I fired it up for the first time this morning (50ish degrees), after +/- 15 seconds (not sure), something clicked & it became much quieter but still a very apparent hum/whine (like when you're low on pwr steering fluid). Does this mean this the valve is stuck open for good? By the way, I have no check engine light, yet, & I haven't noticed any loss of performance, yet. I'm interested in the SlyFox bypass & continuing to read on. Thanks for any advice or help.

Get a bypass....sooner the better.
I can ship you one out Monday....hard to tell if your valves are open or closed....your truck will tell you though. Just wait for the codes and get the code scanned. Not sure where you are located. If in cold environment, park outside tonight......under ~41F when cranked in the morning and the system shouldn't turn on anyway. You can do that til the bypass is put in if possible.
email me at jeffcolemaps at gmail if your interested.

4 runner owners

Toyota 4 runner owners please call 1-800-332-4331, your engine part is most likely to fail if not already !!! and Toyota even knows about it for the same engine !
We failed on one vehicle and other seems to be on its way.
Toyota would not publish a TSB on this yet but are taking calls to review/re-imburse cases.

Secondary Air Injection Pump Failure

Background:
No Check engine light, no faults detected on two scanners.
About a week ago or so, I started up my SUV in the morning and immediately heard a loud ( Shop Vac sounding) buzzing type noise from under the hood that I had never heard before on any vehicle. I froze in confusion trying to listen for what the hell it was. By the time I opened my door to get out and look under neath the noise stopped and everything was fine. Normal idle, no check engine light. Nothing. So I drove cautiously and everything was fine. Through out that day I turned off and started my truck up multiple times with the noise never showing its face again.

Day x(will differ with your vehicle): First start in the morning and the same thing happens. Same noise. I immediately pop the hood and find the noise coming from lower passenger side of the block. but still cannot pinpoint exact location.

Video of a SUV with same noise :

Day X+ : Nothing happens the rest of the day on any other start up except the first.
No mechanic able to explain.

Day X++: Same Thing EXCEPT. check engine light and this code. P1445

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IF YOU EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM, you will if not already, it is documented for the same engine used in other vehicles like Tundra, Sequioa etc.

Toyota Customer assistance : 1-800-331-4331 FREE <--- If you have a 4 runner, call them and ask what Toyota was doing related to this problem, if they already know about the failing part on same engines on other vehicles.

The Customer Service rep acknowledged that Tundra's and Sequoia's with the V8 have the exact same defective part as 4 runner(same engine). And on those vehicles Toyota was willing to extend the warranty to 150k and either repair or reimburse previously repaired trucks.

They went on to explain that they do have quite a few documented cases but not enough to make Toyota take the next step and extend the warranty on 4runners to Replace or reimburse for work done on this part. “They are monitoring”
Remember how they were monitoring the “acceleration issue” till many lives were lost ?

Its over 3 grand out of pocket if its not covered.

If you call and get your vehicle registered for this issue, If you pay or have paid to have it fixed. KEEP ALL RECEIPTS.
If you paid, had it fixed and don't own it anymore but can prove you paid to fix it. and they extend the warranty they WILL reimburse you.

*If you didnt fix it yet, call, call and call some more. If they extend warranty, the total cost of approx 3 grand will be covered by toyota.

This is an overview of what they are: Secondary air injection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They're also known as smog pumps.

Here's a quick rundown of the failure and how they function along w/ potential fixes:

The following is copied from the AIP bypass page on Tundra solutions forum:

SAS Failure:
If you are not familiar with the Air Induction Pump Or Secondary Exhaust Valve problems on the Gen. 1a and Gen. 2 Tundras consider yourself lucky.
Although Toyota extended the warranty on the 2nd Gen tundras to cover replacement or repair of the system plenty of us have been shafted and stuck with only 2 options to remedy the problem: pay several thousand dollars to replace/repair the AIP secondary emission system or go to lengths to bypass and eliminate the system all together. The AIP system simply pumps air into the exhaust on startup to help get the catalytic converters up to operating temperature faster and thus improve emissions. It does not have any affect on performance unless the system fails. Two modes of failure are common. The air induction pump fails or the exhaust valves get stuck open or closed. I encountered a pump failure on my 05' Tundra DC XSP a couple of months ago, since it is not covered by warranty and the quote I received from my Toyota dealer was $3400 to replace the system I began working on an engineered solution to disable or bypass the system. Disconnecting the pump will disable the system but cause its own engine code. If your exhaust valves are stuck or leaking you will also need to install exhaust block off plates to prevent exhaust from flowing back into the system and causing "limp mode" even if the system is bypassed.

ok my question is this, my 2005 sequoia started making that noise awhile ago i had no idea what it was and never had it checked... and now the check engine light and vsc trac and trac off lights are on, and it started bottoming out when id punch on the gas like getting out on the highway, so i took it to the dealer, its way past the year and milage mark for any kind of warranty and they said it was the secondary air injection system and would cost about $2500 to fix, so my question is, is it safe to drive around while its out? like before i have the money to get it fixed? it still runs and will go down the highway i just cant punch on the gas. i just need to know until i have the money to get it fixed if its safe to drive?

I have an 05 Sequoia, mine went out a couple years ago and I installed the bypass kit. If emissions testing isn't going to be a problem then i highly recommend the bypass kit. The reason I make that suggestion is because the dealer will typically only warranty their repairs for 1 year. You may find yourself in the same situation again. My dealer was upfront with me about that potential as they have had repeat failures on newer models as well.

Well I am now a member of this unfortunate club .. same situation as previous poster.

Hoping I can still get one of those bypass kits from someone.

I have a 2005 V8 4Runner Sport 2WD with 176,500 miles on it. I am in Florida so cold is not an issue but humid heat is.

My codes: P2445 and P0418. (Secondary Air Injection System Pump Stuck OFF Bank 1, and Secondary Air Injector Relay Malfunction, respectively). When I first got these codes last week, P2445 said "pending"and P0418 said "current" ... not sure what the latest readings said.

I also had C1201 recently but that went away after putting on a new gas cap.

Symptoms: Check Engine light on, VSC TRAC light on, and running in Limp Mode -- sluggish acceleration at 30-50mph.

I bought an Actron code scanner and cleared the codes for the second time. The first time my mechanic cleared them after installing 8 new spark plugs. The lights/codes came back on after 5 days. Putting on the new gas cap did not get rid of the lights or any of the P codes.

So I went to Toyota dealer and was quoted the same outrageous prices as everyone else here. I also need both front brake calipers replaced for yet another unaffordable fee.
Specifically, the dealer said the pistons are sticking and wheels are not rolling free. I also have that "surge" upon acceleration after braking, and with limp mode that surge happens on a delay, long after hitting the gas.

Question: Could these codes be related at all to the front brake calipers going bad? Or do they strictly mean that I really do have a bad air pump and valves? (The quote was to replace pump and 2 valves).

By the way, the Toyota dealer was apparently so pissed that I didn't agree to the repairs that they wanted to charge me $50 just to clear the code lights! Unbelievable. I got the Actron for $60 from Advance Auto Parts to tide me over until I can get that kit.

Many posts on this topic are from years ago on here so just wondering if anyone else here dealing with this now or offering fix kits? Thanks

Yeah I still sell the kits.
$45. Email me at jeffcolemaps at gmail

OK, so you have the 0418 code which has absolutely nothing to do with your brake calipers so that's a whole other story(search forum).

The 0418 is basically a shorted pump motor.
This is fairly common as well as the pumps age. So for those that haven't taken the warnings......if you do the bypass early.....you avoid all this mess! I had a 0418 when I did mine years ago.....it was intermittent and the bypass "fixed" it but if it is permanently shorted you will need the Pump pack below.

I do not sell a 0418 "bypass"......Hewitt-Tech does though. $150 I think.
If I were you I would order a 0418 Pump Pack he calls it which tricks the ECU into thinking the pump is OK. Then also get a bypass. Mine or his matters not to me. He sells the blockoff plates as well for $55 if you don't get one of his bypass kits. I've never talked to or met the guy, just seen his site.

If you have time or are short funds; get the bypass first, then add the plates of 0418 pack as needed later. DONT do the others without doing bypass first or at same time.

Slyfox kit shipping today. My non-dealer mechanic quoted me $1000 to fix the AIP issue.

Will you still be able to pass CA smog checks with this? I was under the impression that you can't pass without a functioning smog pump? Have you heard from any other CA people that have used the bypass and still passed?
Thanks

Just show up with a hot car. The pump doesn't run anyway when the car is already hot.

my 05 has not exhibited any of these issues yet, from what i've gathered though, it is recommended to perform the bypass as preventative maintenance.

Do it. I found this thread after I exhibited the symptoms. I did the bypass install last week. Comes with instructions. Now it drives fine.

I installed the bypass kit as a preventative measure.
